Vo . 59 No. 1
here the HecK is Carthage, TX?
I II # elcome to ail of the
l/W new students at Pa-
ll V nola College, i am
sure that one of the thoughts
in your head is, "What is there
to do in Carthage, TX?" Yes,
Carthage is a very small town,
but that doesn't mean there
aren't many fun things to do,
see, and be seen doing.
For all of you movie
buffs, let me direct your at-
tention to the Carthage Twin
Cinema, located at 1120 W
Panola St. Or, if you are more
of a homebody, renting is al-
ways an option at The Movie
Gallery also located on W Pa-
nola St. After a movie, dinner
is a necessity. In Carthage we
have a fine selection of res-
taurants, many within walk-
ing distance of campus.
To ail of you love birds
around campus, The Cottage
would be a romantic place
to have lunch and relax for
awhile. If you feel like relaxing
take a walk around the Texas
Country Music Hall of Fame/
Tex Ritter Museum and relive
great moments in country
music history.
For those who enjoy
outdoor sports and activities,
try taking a trip to Lake Mur-
vaul or Caddo Lake. You can
enjoy boating, tubing, skiing,
fishing, or just enjoy the scen-
ery.
If Carthage doesn't ful-
fill your need for fun, more
exciting attractions are not
far from reach. Longview is a
city within driving distance
with many activities such as
bowling, shopping, eating,
skating, miniature golf, and
more. The approximate driv-
ing distance is forty-five min-
utes, as shown on the direc-
tions to your right.
Another popular city
not far away is Shreveport, LA.
The approximate driving dis-
tance is one hour, also shown
on the directions to your right.
A fun attraction in Shreveport
is the Louisiana Boardwalk. At
the Boardwalk you can, shop
at a variety of stores, have
lunch or dinner at a different
variety of restaurants includ-
ing Joe's Crab Shack and Buf-
falo Wild Wings.
in Nov. 4th election
The November 4th na-
tional election could be one
of the most life changing
elections yet.
"It is very important for col-
lege students in today's so-
ciety to get out and vote -
whether it be elections at the
national, state, or local levels,"
says James Hallmark, profes-
sor of government and his-
tory at Panola College.
Young people often
get caught up in school or
other distractions and don't
take the time to register and
vote. As a student your opin-
ion matters just as much as
anyone else's.Taking the time
to register and vote is a way
to voice your opinion.
October 6 is the dead-
line to register to be eligible
to vote in the November 4,
2008 General Election. This
can be either the postmark
date or the date the applica-
tion is received in the office of
the voter registrar. Voter reg-
istrations become effective 30
days after they are submitted
and accepted by the county
voter registrar.
"Students need to
know the candidates, the is-
sues, and their respective
parties, especially at the state
and local levels, where party
politics is often vastly differ-
ent than what one sees and
hears on the national level,"
says Hallmark.
