Resents added medical fee
>Dcar Editor:
£ My family and I have
'jived in this area over 17
•.years and have used the
Bastrop Medical facilities
^whenever the need arose.
;» Our youngest child was
delivered at the hospital by
; 'Dr. Marshall; he operated
■ :on another; all our needs in
the medical line were tend-
:ed to in an outstanding
■ manner by the staff and
•doctors in Bastrop.
Our health insurance
•paid part of the hospital
stays: the balance we al-
ways managed to pay
when due without com-
plaint or question.
Today was my first ex-
perience with the clinic
since they have tied in with
the Houston outfit. My
wife hurt her finger. We
went to the clinic, then to
the x-ray rooms at the
hospital, then back to Dr.
Marshall, who looked at
tl^e x-ray, which showed
no break, a splint was put
on the finger, and I had to
make out three checks.
Dr. Marshall~$20.00
Clinic--$19.00 plus $1.50
for splint
Dr. Roger A. Mauphin-
$9.00
I resent paying Dr.
Mauphin, radiologist, who
was not there, but pomes in
twice a week, that $9.00. I
hardly think when and if
he does glance at the pic-
ture he will discover any-
thing Dr. Marshall could
not see.
No doubt, as they say,

this new set up will provide
better health care for this
area. After all, most other
businesses these days are a
part of a chain operation,
and making a profit is the
bottom line.
Thanks for listening' to
my little $9.00 gripe. May-
be I just don't realize the
importance of having a
special man looking at that
x-ray.

(Editor's Note: It's our
opinion that medical costs
are going to increase as we
add specialists to our ho»-*
pital and clinic but that
having that extra expertise
is well worth the cost. In
this case, however, hospital
spokesman say the fee to
Dr. Mauphin has nothing
to do with Houston
Memorial Hospital System.
The clinic has had a radi-
ologist for many years.
Formerly his carge was in-
cluded in the charge of an
X-ray. Now federal regu-
lations require that it is to
be a separate charge and
the clinic has also reduced
its X-ray charge to partly
compensate.)
There's an ominous smpll of retribution and petty
revenge at City Hall.
Department of Public Safety Patrolman Robert Klaus'
now has a stain on His record because of a wholly unneces-
- sary letter of complaint sent to the DPS by Mayor Benton
Sims.
Sims filed the official complaint - even though the
Bastrop City Council never discussed sending such a let-
ter - because he didn't like remarks Klaus made or didn't
Earlier Bastrop
not forgotten
Dear Editor:
Now that the holidays
are over, I am writing to
tell you how much we
enjoy our hometown
newspaper. Especially
about the Dec. 9, 1982,
article of Mr. and Mrs.
Isom Reese of Sayers,
Texas. *—■
I could duplicate the
article Mrs. Reese reported
to Peggy Trepagnier. I
actually re-lived it as I was
a girl 10 or 12 years old at
the time. I was visiting my
Aunt and Uncle Johnnie
McDowell and not
McDow. His wife Carrie
cooked for the men.
Later Uncle Johnnie
moved back home to Bas-
trop where he owned a
home and still worked for
the railroad as foreman.
The home is still standing
so. of the freeway on Mark
on St. and vacant. u v
There he lived until he
retired (now deceased).
Mr. Richard Lee Holmes
Sr. was foreman for a
number of years, later his
son, Richard Jr., was fore-
man until the jobs were
abolished or changed. I
think her story Was a very
interesting one. A real hard
time, her memory is very
good at her age, so is mine;

make at a City Council meeting. Klaus had gone to the
meeting to find out about drainage solutions and was
asked by a councilman what Klaus thought about speed
traps.
Klaus mortally offended Mayor Sims and city bureau-
crats by saying he didn't think too much of local law en-
forcement.
For that terrible offense, Klaus has now been repri-
manded bythe DPS.
Mayor Sims has managed to waste the time of the DPS-
time it needs to control accidents and investigate crimes -
and get a young patrolman censured. We are told thfe
mayor and his councilman grandson may have been upset
with local DPS officers Qvervother matters that have
nothing to do with official city business. We don't know
for a fact if that's true. We do know that some Bastrop
residents may now feel intimidated against speaking up at
City Council meetings and we think that is a terrible price
topay for one letter.
