In November, the City of
Dallas deeded about 200 acres of
land around 1-20 corridor of
southern Dallas to the UNT Sys-
tem. This acquisition makes pos-
sible the development of the first
public university in Dallas and
the expansion of the UNT
System's presence in the Dallas/
Fort Worth Metroplex.
Construction of the new
UNT at Dallas could start in late
2004 pending the approval of
funding from the 2003 Texas
Legislature as well as the Texas

Q) By the end of September,
Lydia Evans, sophomore, con-
tracted bacterial meningitis.
)0 t This disease led Evans to 15
Ui life-saving surgeries and the
partial amputations of seven of
wk ' her fingers and of both of her
legs below the knees.
I0 '=According to her doctors at
Q) Baylor Hospital in Waco, Evans
E had a 4 percent chance of sur-
vival, but she defied the odds
and recovered. Seven months
later, in March, Evans was re-
leased from Baylor Institute for
t~ ~ Rehabilitation. As soon as Evans was diag-
nosed, students who believed
they may have come in contact
with her could receive antibiot-
ics at the Health Center. Some
students waited up to three hours
to receive the antibiotic pill.
On September 27, 2001,
NT offered a mass meningitis
vaccination in the Coliseum.
The shot cost $90, and the
dean of students office offered
loans to help students pay.
In April, Evans attended the
Student Government Associa-
tion meeting that passed legisla-tion requesting that
the state of Texas re-
quire freshmen and
transfer students to
receive meningitis
shots prior to enter-
ing NT.
Evans plans to at-
tend NT in the fall
of 2002.I I
