Lady Eagles discuss straget
during a time out. This year was one of rebuilding for the
Lady Eagles. With only five returning
players from last year's 21-9 season,
they had their work cut out for them.
Head coach Tina Slinker carried the
task of molding a group of mostly new-
comers into a team. Though it was a
difficult task, it is one that Coach
Slinker did not seem to have a problem
taking on.
Slinker has coached the Lady Eagles
for fourteen seasons. She has watched
the program grow tremendously, taking
the team to numerous conference victo-
ries over the years. She is perhaps the
most successful head coach in the his-
tory of Lady Eagles basketball. Slinker is
anchored by assistant coaches Angela
Ortega, Janice Dziuk, and new addition
Latricia Trammell.
To aid in the task at hand, the team
had two returning seniors: Post Vilma
Grismanauskaite and Forward Angel
Lewis. In addition, they had two freshmen
players, Guards Erika Bobo and Jamie
Armstrong, step up to starting positions.
"We have a really talented group," said
Slinker.
The Lady Eagles made some substantial
victories early in the season. They won 66-
65 over Weber State, an NCAA qualifying
school, and also had victories in the South-
west Texas Tournament. In conference play,*conference games only
they were 3-7 overall.
The team has watched the attendance
at games grow a great deal. Slinker at-
tributes this to the team's ability and
success.
"It's been a challenge to get students
to get involved," she said.
That does not seem to be as big a
problem, especially since last season's
success. The basketball team has also
noticed a growth in community support.
This is due to the loyal Denton fan base
and the fact that a majority of their games
this season were played in Texas.
The program is not only focused on
achievement on the court; the coaches
want to make sure the team focuses on
academics first. Last season, the Lady
Eagles had an overall 3.0 grade point
average. This was due to assistant coach
Angela Ortega, who oversees academics
for the team.
The future for the Lady Eagles looks
bright and full of triumphs. However,
the major triumph that Coach Slinker is
concerned with is more personal. When
asked about what she wants for the team
in the future, she said, "I would like to
win a conference championship, but I
really want to make a differ-
ence in these kids' lives ... to
make them better people." Freshmani
