GEOGRAPHY, TOPOGRAPIIY,
produced from the timber of the country, were it well
supplied with saw-mills, yet labor is so much in demand,
and wages so high in Texas, that at present, it
is believed, that lumber may be imported from the United
States at a less expense to the purchaser, at least
upon the sea-board of Texas, than it could be had from
saw.mills in the country. However this may be, in
respect to lumber in its rough state, there can be little
doubt that such as should be imported ready worked
and fitted for building, could be afforded at a cheaper
rate than could the same, or similar, prepared in the
country from its native growth of timber.
It is frequently asked, " Why is every thing so high
in Texas ?" And, " How can the people there afford
-to pay such prices?" In answer to the first question,
it may be said, that freight from New Orleans, where
almost all supplies for Texas have been purchased, is
exceedingly high; import duties on many articles are
high; the rate of exchange has been much against
Texas; and, more than all, no one expects to do busi.
ness in Texas at a less profit than from fifty to one
hundred per cent.
In answer to the second question, it may be said,
that the people of Texas cannot now afford the prices
they pay for almost all articles of consumption, and
that they are only, perhaps, generally, able to pay such
prices by disposing of their surplus lands.
But this state of things, which is a great evil to
Texas, will, it is believed, be soon remedied, not, per.
haps, in the least by diminishing profits on trade, but,
first, by means of a better currency, which Texas may
have in a short tirle, and must have eventually. If the
