An open letter
T^iis letter was sent to
Basil Phillips, chairman of the
Board of Publications, in response
to a memo from him to the co-
editors of the Megaphone. This
memo was written to inform the
editors that they would not receive
their January salary because the
first Megaphone was "four weeks
late."
In reference to your memo con-
cerning our salaries we would like
to express our feelings in the
matter. There seems to be a mis-
understanding which we feel
obligated to react to.
First, as we have repeatedly ex-
pressed in the past the journalism
situation at Southwestern is
anything but desirable. Recruiting
a new staff of people with no idea
of what creating a newspaper in-
volves with only the editor's ideas
and experience as basis, makes it
very difficult to put out a
newspaper in a short period of
time. In your memo you say that
the newspapep-was four weeks late
in coming out. The first issue of
the Megaphone was printed on
January 30. This means that ac-
cording to you it should have been
printed first on January 2. This
would have presented problems.
There was no one here to write the
newspaper nor was there anyone
to read it seeing that school did not
start until January 7. The next
possible date of publication would
have been January 9, two days
after the first classes. So you
suggest that it was our respon-
sibility to put out the second paper
with only two days to recruit a
staff, organize, assign stories,
have them written, lay out the
paper and have it printed.
The first feasible day for
publication would have been
January 16. Although this date
would have been within the realm
of possibility, it was highly unlike- „
ly as any rational observer would
discover in looking at what we had
to deal with in organizing the first
issue. January 23 is the date which
we had picked as being the earliest
possible day for publication. That
the paper did not come out until
the following week was due to our
decision that enough material was
simply not available and that the
newspaper would benefit from the
postponement of one week. And
thus it did. The paper was one of
the best we've had a chance to be a
part of.
The editor's major duties for the
semester come in the first month
when he must work from ground
up in creating a workable
organization. Although there is
nothing physical to show for this
work, except for the subsequent
semester's newspapers, this is his
busiest time.
As far as we know there is no
obligation concerning the first
date of publication for the
Megaphone. If there is we have
never been informed. Besides,
given the situation here concer-
ning journalism, we find it
ludicrous for anyone to expect
much of anything from any editor
or editors foolish enough to accept
the position. Mike Miller
