TEXAS HERITAGE
A PUBLICATION OF THE TEXAS HISTORICAL FOUNDATION I EST. 19541 $5 ISSUE j Volume 4 2012From Conflict to Kinship: Quanah Parker,
Fort Worth, and the Lone Star State
Against the backdrop of decades of conflict be-
tween the Comanches and Texans, Chief Qua-
nah Parker would make the transition from being
viewed as "brutal savage" to being claimed as Fort
Worth's "adopted native son." Intertwined with
this account of Parker's life after his tribe's reloca-
tion to Oklahoma is the story of his mother Cyn-
thia Ann Parker, who was at the center of one of
Texas' most compelling captivity narratives.

How Texans Described the Comanches
From early Spanish missionaries to the first presi-
dent of the Texas Republic, eyewitness accounts
of the Comanches paint fascinating, yet often con-
tradictory portraits of this Native American tribe
that called themselves The People.

The Council House Fight
A March 1840 meeting at a San Antonio court
house demonstrated that the contentious relation-
ship between the Comanches and Texans could
not be resolved through peaceful negotiations.
