first feat of pedestrianlsm was a
walk from Boston to Washington, in
1X61, to attend Ate first inaugura-
tion or President Lincoln. His real
career as a professional began in
1867, when he walked from Port-
land, Me., to Chicago. His last and
greatest achievement was a trans-
continental walk, accomplished in
the early part of last year when he
past past seventy yearB of age. He
started from Los Angeles on Feb-
ruary 1 and arrived In New York on
May 3, completing the transcontin-
ental journey of 3,493 miles in 77
walking days, a feat without parallel
in the unnals of pedestrlanlsm.
