Lifeguards keep an eye out for your safety
First-year lifeguard
rescues 4-year-old
girl.

Lifeguards at the Bas-
trop State Park pool keep
a close eye on swimmers
and pH levels while hun-
dreds of children flock to
the pool this summer.
Bastrop YMCA pool
operations manager T.J.
Christian was a lifeguard
last year and stressed the
importance of following
the rules, in and around
the pool, to maintain
pool safety.
“Make sure your child
is comfortable with the
water,” she said. “The
more comfortable they
are, the easier it is to
guard the pool.”
Christian, who is also
an educator and coach at
Smithville High School,
said she enjoys the tran-
quility of the pool setting
and working with the life-
guards of Bastrop YMCA.
This is Bastrop High
School junior Alexus Ro-
driguez’s first season as a
lifeguard.
“I enjoy interacting
with the familiar fac-
es I see at the pool,” she
said. “On the other hand,
there is a lot of pressure
to keep your eyes on the
pool for the safety of the
swimmers.”
Rodriguez suggests
swimmers be aware of
their surroundings at the
pool to keep a safe and
positive atmosphere.
“Don’t run, because
you could slip and fall,
and don’t swim in the
deep end unless you
know how to swim well,”
she said.
“When one person is
struggling, the lifeguards
attention will be on one
swimmer instead of all,”
she added.
To become a certi-
fied lifeguard, applicants
must be at least 16 years
old and display strong
swimming abilities.
Future lifeguards
are taken through a
two-weekend course,
which includes aquatic
challenges, such as swim-
ming 300 meters contin-
uously while doing var-
ious strokes; treading
water for two minutes;
swimming 100 meters,
then diving down six feet
to bring up a 10-pound
brick.
SHS graduate Hunter
Bell can be found geared
up in his red lifeguard at-
tire, manning his stand
and monitoring the pool
at a bird’s-eye view.
In his first season as a
lifeguard, Bell has lived
up to the name. He saved
a 4-year-old girl who was
struggling to keep afloat
and became submerged.
“I blew my whistle and
dove in to save her,” he
said. “She was somewhat
unconscious, but finally
came to and coughed up
water without me having
to perform CPR.”
Bell said this was an
eye-opening experience
for him.
“I completed the class-
es and heard stories, but
I didn’t realize the true
importance of the job un-
til I actually saved a life,”
he said.
