6f the Government. From this time dates the re-establishioeht
of the influence of the NAVARRO family, which a
seies of misfortunes had for the time obscured. All the
o!ces and honors in the gift of the people were literally
showered upon them, and the patriotic Mexican Colonel
FPANCISCO RIRIz, an uncle of ANTONIO'S, who had been
an exile in the United States since Spanish supremacy in
1813, for his efforts in behalf of Mexican Independence,
was sent for by the Emperor ITURBIDE, in 1822, and received
a public welcome on his return. DON FRANCISCO Ruiz,
whose name alone will excite grateful recollections among
many old Texans, was one of the foremost champions in
the cause of Texas, and was a member of the Texas Convention
in 1836. ANTONIO was indeed fortunate to have
such a mentor, and by his advice and counsel, he was
guided in all his enterprises. Alas! this venerable patriot
has ceased to exist, and he sleeps, almost forgotten, among
many of his less illustrious contemporaries; but I speak
the truth when I say he was a man who wished not for
even posthumous honors, but whose only reward was his
innate consciousness of having done his duty to his country
and his fellow man. But let us follow the steps of
Jos6 ANTONIO, and we must go slowly not to tire him, for
he was lame; when very young he had a tumor on his left
leg, which in consequence lost its elasticity. We can hear
him recounting the anecdote how bitterly he cried, when a
little boy, on first realizing the loss of the use of his leg,
ad the impression he had, that he would lose his physical
strength, and with it all chance of ever making himself
fafnous. One day he summoned up his courage,to ask his
father if he could be ever capable of great determination,
