THE UNION CENTRAL RAILROAD
A petition appears in this issue
from citizens of the northwestern
part of the county asking that the
Board of Trade reconsider the Union
Central railroad proposition The
people of that section of the county
want a railroad and want it had and
they should have one It is one of
the most prosperous and most prom-
ising sectionsof the county And in
this connection the Herald can pledge
those people that the business people
represented by the Board of Trade or-
ganization would like to see that
section of country crossed by a rail
road leading to Palestine But for all
that the Herald believes the course
taken by the Board in connection
with this especial proposition was
wise and proper The people back ot
pi to show thls peo
ple that they were in a position to
build this road while everything con-
nected with their schemes indicated
they were more interested in conduct-
ing a land scheme than they were in
building a railroad and they were
making too free use of the name of
the Palestine Board of Trade in pro-
moting their schemes
A circular was distributed in Pales-
tine this week signed by the Union
Central Railroad in which is stated
thafthe newspapers of Palestine had
refused to print advertising matter
from the Union Central Railroad com-
pany when pay was offered So far
as the Herald is concerned that is
an unqualified lie The only tiling
ever offered hy Mr Hogue was
through a man named Berry and
was a communication in which it was
stated the paper was knocking the
proposition because it was paid by
certain interests to do so The state-
ment was a lie and Berry was ad-
vised to return the manuscript to
return the manuscript to Mr Hogue
and tell him that it was declined he
cause the assertion was a lie
No advertising matter has ever
been offered the Herald by Mr Hogue
or the Union Central railroad and
the Herald therefore has not refused
to accept it
As to whether or not it would ac-
cept or reject advertising matter de-
pends on the character There are
certain kinds of ads the Herald will
not print even for money And it
has refused to print them It has
never refused to print any legitimate
ad of a clean character offered by
people able to pay for it and on the
other hand has never accepted and
printed an ad knowingly which was
meant to mislead and deceive
section This the Herald firmly be-
lieves
Temporarily the state headquarters
are located here and in charge of
Mr B M Anderson there has been
manifest much activity The demand
for canners supplies is greater than
ever before and thousands of cans
arc being shipped from this point
daily Mr Anderson has already made
arrangements for receiving and stor-
ing in Palestine home canned goods
and for the obtaining of a liberal ad-
vance of money on same thus enab-
ling any member to purchase cans
and supplies that he may continue
canning without being forced to sell
when the market is not favorable
These goods will be concentrated and
sold to the very best advantage and
will be handled in car load lots
If Palestine secures the permanent
headquarters she will have to mani-
fest her desire in some substantial
way for Jacksonville Tyler and
other places are anxious for these
headquarters This matter should be-
taken up without delay by the Board
of Trade
Within the last twelve months
more than 23000000 have been do-
nated to colleges and schools in this
country That is a good showing
Texas does not get near the top in
this liberal donation <
John Mitchell would make an ad-
mirable running mate with Bryan on
the democratic ticket He is head
and shoulders above the army of pol-
iticians who naturally feel that one of
their number should be chosen for
the position
According to the Washington re-
view of the presidential possibilities
Taft is about the greatestman that
ever lived He has done about every-
thing except actually create a world
and may be given credit for this be
fore the campaign closes
The people of Palestine seem to
be up against it in the way of finding
people who are willing to earn a-
piece of money in keeping the lawns
cut and the premises in order There
is constant employment for a dozen
men with lawn mowers in this town
but the men are not to be had Yet
a big hunch of loafers are on the
streets all the time
The Herald stands ready at all
times to promote the interests ot Pal-
estine and Anderson county and
never overlooks an opportunity know-
ingly to help push a good thing But
it has Its own opinions of things and
cannot be driven to accept others
judgment against Its own If you
have a good thing for the town or
county we will help you push it along
An industrial magazine in an edi-
torial says twothirds of the men in
American prisons are men without
professions or trades Theie Is a
great sermon in that brief statement
It is a crime in this day and time to
let a boy grow up without learning
something and giving him the oppor
tunity to make a useful man and citi
zen Staying up town at night smok-
ing cigarettes is not calculated to
equip a boy for the work of the world

To the Business Men of Palestine
We the citizens of Montalba Black-

We consider the material interests

We wish to express ourTEgrcts at
the recent action of the Board of
Trade in returning the 5000 check to
Mr Hogue and closing negotiations
with him thereby preventing the
building of the road through Palestine
We prefer the road built to our
county seat than to any other point
on the I G N lailroad However
we are going to use every effort to
further the construction of this road
whether it is built through Palestine
or not We and our ancestry did our
full part in the payment of the 150
000 to get the I G N lailroad into
Palestine which made it a city in-
stead of a country village but left us
from ten to twentyfive miles in the
woods Also the memory of the lost
T N O still lingers in our minds
Palestine and our community should
today be enjoying the benefits of that
road and we do not think that the
bfame for its loss should rest at our
door
We do not intend to criticise in an
unfriendly manner the actions of any

we prefer this road built through Pal-
estine and hope that the citizens of
Palestine will reconsider the action
of the Board of Tiado and will take
steps toward getting Mr Hogue to
open negotiations with Palestine
again
t
We consider this a critical moment
in the history of the advancement of
our coiinty and a time when all
should work together
We know that Palestine to some de-
gree values the business patronage of
our communities and desires a con-
tinuance of the same and it is but
natural that we should expect some
returns from Palestine and we hope
that the citizens of Palestine will
consider the financial welfaie of our
county in general and will use every
legitimate and honorable means to
secure this road and we will pledge
ourselves To fender suctf aTd smay
