THE CONGRESSIONAL CONVENTION.
The fact thet theTrafta-Cohtinental
R.R. company has stopped work and
are selling all die supplies along the
line of the road, does not look very
favor able, to the Sherman people. A
thousand bushels of corn were sold
at Bonham on Wednesday, the 14th.

The conference met in St. Louis
on the 13th inst, at 12 o’clock. May-
or Brown was unanimously chosen
to preside. Short addresses were
delivered by Mayor Brown, Gover-
nor Woodson, Mr. Blow, Mr. Stan-
ard, Gen. Bussey and others. A re-
ception was given the members at
the Southern Hotel in the evening.
Hon. A. H. Willie, ot this State,
invited the convention to visit Gal-
veston, which was accepted.
THE MODOC WAR.
A telegram from San Francisco,
dated May 13th, says Capt. Has-
brouck’s command was attaked by a
party of Modocs, and four soldiers
and one Warm Spring Indian killed
and six soldiers and one Warm
Spring Indian wounded. The troops
were taken completely by surprise.
Captain Jack and his band rode
within one hundred yards of the
camp, and all dismounted and charg.
ed into the camp, tiring into the herd
and guard.
Captain Jack had on the attire of
Gen. Canby, and took a position in
the field as if he was a Brigadier
General. Capt. Hasbrouck rallied
his command and charged upon
them in a body. The Modocs re-
treated under the charge and were
driven to the woods., scattering in
all directions. Several volleys were
fired at them but it is not known
whether anv were killed. The troops
succeeded in capturing twenty-five
horses belonging to the Modocs.
The Modocs are entirely out of
their lava bed stronghold. The ar-
tillery will be moved to the side ot
the lake to prevent the Indians re-
turning to the lava beds, and the bal-
ance of the troops will follow and
exterminate them. It is the opinion
of Capt. Hasbrouck that the Modocs
are almost entirely out of ammunition.
