Canadian gentlemen
were role models
AT THE RECENT CHS REUNION, I spotted Erbin Crowell across
the gym from me. On that particular day Mr. Crowell, whom 1 always
remembered as looking “neat,” was his usual impeccable self. Mr.
Crowell always reminded me of Cary Grant, very dapper, not a hair out
of place.
As a youngster growing up with my friends in Canadian, in the days
before TV became a childhood diversion, I was very active in Boy
Scouts. 1 was indeed fortunate to have been under the leadership of
several outstanding—and quite busy—men who chose to reside in Ca-
nadian, but traveled extensively in their jobs.
Many years later, I find myself traveling around the United States
on business, and recalling fond memories of these true gentlemen and
the excellent examples they set for the impressionable youth of our
community. They were our inspiration, instilling in us the desire to be
neat and well groomed, to wear clean clothes, no matter our destina-
tion—church, school, or work—I still carry a clean handkerchief. We
also learned courtesy and respect—1 still hold doors for ladies.
Several of my “heroes” have passed on, such as Dale Nix a few
weeks ago. Erbin Crowell and Tom Abraham are two of those still with
us. Thanks, Mr. Crowell, Mr. Abraham, and all the teachers to us boys
of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s. When you encounter these fine people around
town, please—for me—shake their hand and say “well done."

Kudos for reader's
favorite Wildcat
THIS LETTER IS IN REGARD TO ONE Canadian Wildcat football
player, Coleman Bartlett. As you know, Coleman injured his ankle very
seriously the first of the season and has only been able to play 2 or 3
plays in the last few games. To come off the bench cold and still be able
to throw touchdown passes and contribute to his team tells me that he
is a great little athlete with a lot of heart and desire to play the game. I
feel that he should get some special recognition for not giving up and
still want to play and help his team win.
Of course, I’m only his Grandmother, but I still know a great little
athlete with a lot of heart and ability when I see one.
Canadian has a very good team with lots of good athletes and young
players, but I know this one personally and I’m very proud of him. Keep
up the good work, Wildcats.

End partisan posturing....Cnntinued from Page 3
President A1 Gore and Texas Gov. George W. Bush
“steered their campaigns toward the absolute center
of American politics,” The New York Times re-
ported Tuesday.
“This year, both candidates concluded that vot-
ers have no yearning for campaigns founded in ideol-
ogy and prefer mainstream messages."
This does not mean Bush and Gore were cart Kin
copies of each other, Trit-ir positions on important
national and international issues often differed, but
not as radically as in many past presidential
contests.
Both campaigns sought out the broad middle
ground despite simultaneous loud, angry partisan
bickering between the Democratic White He :se and
the Republican-controlled Congress.
Will the vital center to which the presidential can-
didates adhered continue to hold after the 107th
Congress and President-elect Bush take office? It
will to the extent that the new president and, espe-
cially, Congress devote their unbiased opinion, ma-
ture judgment and enlightened conscience to the
public good. They should not subordinate that to
conflicts of rival parties contested for transient polit-
ical advantage and short-term boosts in the polls.
Alongside the Burke quote, each memtier of Con-
gress should post the state motto of Missouri —
“Salus populi suprerna lex esto (Let the welfare of
the people be the supreme law)"
The welfare of the people — the |iublic good, the
best interest of the nation as a whole — should be the
controlling authority no matter the issue. That
should determine every decision every member of
the 107th Congress makes, every bill she introduces,
every vote he casts.
This is how Congress can produce the viable, con-
crete, tasting results the nation needs much more
than partisan or ideological posturing
