interest.
Present negotiations are jiirabtically assured of
success and will result in reduction of interest on
$84000 revenue bonds fr6hi 6 per Cent to A arid
4 1 per cent netting a saving of ' approximately
$6644i00to the city arid reducing the time requir-
ed 'to cornpletie payment of the power plant and dis-
tribution system. '
The statement of operations for 1 936 given by
Mayor Miller in a letter to the R. B. George Invest-
ment Company of Dallas on January 1 1 shows the
splendid success of the plant during the past year.
The statement and explanatory excerpts from
the Mayor's letter follow:
"Replying to your request for a statement
for 1 936 of the operation of the Light Plant
I beg to submit such a statement:

fresent volume of business the plant will accumu-
ate a surplus of approximately $2000 a year above
the monthly payments and operating expenses
Wriffilurplus in all probability will be applied on
the"" indebtedness of the 'plant thus reducing ty-t
leasB 3 more years the time requited to corMte
payment of the system arid making' the much"Besii
ed goal of a debt free plant within approximately
eight years of attainment; '" '
With the service rendered by the rnunicipaj
plaritr"equal in all' respects to that rendered by its
competitor the Te&as Power &;Light' Co. and in
some instances' as during the storm last week rar
superior there is every reason to blieVe'th'e'munl-
cipal plant will continue to hold its' present custom-
jers clnd'even gain hVtne futufe several customers at
the expense of its competitor'.
When the further fact is considered that the Use
6f electrical appliances in homes Is rapidly increas-
ing the plant's volume of business should show a
substantial increase during(the rtex few years thus
treating even" larger profits which would further
reduce the tiriie required to complete payment of
the system arid hasten the day when these profits
would become available for the customers of the
plant.
As the success of Bartlett's venture in home
ownership of its power plant becomes mote pro-
nounced with the passing of each month The Tri-
bune believes that citizens should express their ap-
preciation to Mayor Miller and the members of the
city council for the far sighted and unselfish ser-
vice they rendered in launching the community in-
to this cooperative undertaking that will bestbw
untold benefits upon this community for genera-
tions to come.

"I desire to mention some things' cbttnect-
edtherewithi In our'bookkeeping all disburse-
ments' whether for betterments or not are
run in our expense account. I estimate $735.00
as the amount so spent which I think is con-
servative. Our expense of operation for the
months of July August and September are
too large due to the fact that rwer almost hail a
water famine at that time and we had to
operate the pump on our well '24 hours per
day and then had to ask citizens to economize
on. water use. At that time we let contract
for a new well which 'has-been completed and
putin operatipn so that We do not anticipate
a repetition Q. that condition. Due to the feet
that light plant has flat rate contract with
water plant the .light plantrdid not receive any
extra compensation for the extra service ren-
dered." The success of the Municipal light plant is
exceeding the expectation of itsmost ardent sup-
porters and the question .or what wiu.De dpnev wjth
- the revenue fro mthe light plant when the system
is paid for is already interesting the citizens of
Bartlett.
That the question is not one to be ponsidened in
the distant future may be realized from a brief con-
sideration of the progress that has already been
made toward paying for the plant.
The light plant started operation June 8 -1-934
having been buil at a cost of $90000 and financed
by revenue bonds payajblp to the trustees at the
rate of $800 per month for 1 5 years.. Since opera-
tion of the plant started aI monthly payments have
been promptly met and the goal of a debt free plant
fjai now been reduced under the present set-up to
12 years. Completion of present negotiations for
refunding the revenue bonds from 6iper cent to 41
aa 4fpor cent howmm wilt further reduce by
ernes yemt the ttxru;-qvtirQ tp icpmplete payment.
EXPRESSING SYMPATHY
Citizens of Bartlett unanimously expressed
sympathy to the Texas Power and Light Company
because of the great financial loss sustained during
the storm last week and it might also be added
sympathy was expressed for citizens of neighbor-
ing towns and cities who suffered hardships and in-
conveniences when the "giant" power utility com-
pany's system failed to supply electricity during the
freezing-weather. . '
As Bartlett's power plant and distribution sys-
tem furnished its customers with uninterrupted el-
ectrical service however Bartlett citizen's recalled
with considerable amusement the argument ad-
vanced back in 1933 by power utility cornpany
representatives that a small municipal plant could
n'6tlrender service comparable with service render-
ed by the great power company serving this area.
The.-Tribuneidid not intend to mention this
matter 'but since Judge Lane oftheHearne Demo-
crat 'used one-rhalf of his editorial columns last
week in bragging on the service rendered by
Hearne's Municipal Light Plant during the recent
storm and-used the remaining half of his column
in "pouring it on" the big poWer utility companies
The Tribune felt that in justice tq all-parties con-
cerned the feelings of Bartlett's citizens in the ma-
ter should be reported
r The Tribune would also like ..to : know what
kind- of language; the editor of the Holland Pro-
gress who in 1934 compared Bartlett's poWer
plant to a model T Ford used last week when his
printing1 pressj powered by "juice'' from the big
power utility company refused to turn.
