Red Spider Mites
Giving Trouble
To Local Farmers
By V. C. Marshall
How many red spider mites
are'heeded before you have to
spray? How much damage can
they cause What can. you use
to control them? These are
questions that face many farm-
ers in this area at the present
time. These problems I discus-
sed Wednesday with Dr. J. C.
Gaines Head of the Department
of Entomology at Texas A&M.
He is considered one of the top
men on knowledge of cotton in-
sects in Texas.
Dr. Gaines says to poison for
spider mites if leaves are turn-
ing yellow. This may be in spots
in the field or the entire field.
Spots as well as fields may be
sprayed.
You should spray at least
twice because of ' eggs if you
start spider mite control. Con
trol should be practiced if as
much as Va to bale to the
acre could be made on the land
where the cotton is growing.
Dr. Gaines states that the boll
weevil and boll worm are being
sprayed for now iri the College
Station area and should be. in
the blackland area soon. Methyl
parathion should be used to con-
trol spider mites and should
control the boll weevil. By add-
ing D.D.T. the bollworm can
also be controlled in the same
operation.
Dr. Gaines states that some
species of spider mitqs may be
controlled with sulfur.
Spider mites may cause as
much as 20 to 25 damage in
the fields by reduction in the
bolls and reduction in the size

Pamphlet L-218 on the con-
trol of Texas cotton insects is
available at The Tribune office
and from V. C. Marshall.
