Many of our cotemporarics aro again
urging tho necessity for.advertining these
bales. .The iininen.se benefits to bo derived
from such a courso aro admitted by all
with Hio exception it. maybe of a few
speculators who profit by tho present im-
perfect mode of making sheriff's sales and
others of a. similar class known to tho pub-
lic. Tho Crockett Printer in his usual
graphic and humorous stylo gives us tho
followiugupou tho subject. '
"Thd press should how"takcliptho much
dibcusscd Hiibjeet of advertising slierifi'
sales tho wa.f it is and the manner in
which it bliouhl bo done. The slierill' now
'posts his notice in writing upon a tree
ou u door or wall. Jt requires throe such
notices' considerable labdr to tho nhori(l'
and of course lie does not take much trouble
to mako them plain or distinct. Then the
language is not always definite or under-
stood by tho reader evon if it stuy long
enough to bo read or finds a render for in
this last ago whostayslongeuough if sober
at a court house door or beside a treo to
decipher the "hieroglyphics" of a country
slier i IV unless it bo a speculator or ono in-
terested in tho purchase of tho property to
bo sold at a cheap rate. Again how lonjj
will a bit of paper htand a ruin or wind and
how many people are the wiser for its be-
ing posted up That's as it is now let's
look how should be. The sheritV writes
out ono notico only takes it to the printer
who corrects tho language gives it a defi-
nite point and meaning ; it then goes to
tho people in plain print it goes to their
homes and it is read at leisure hours not
by ono man only but each paper by not
less than half a dozen and there aro pro-
bably not less than fivo hundred copies of
that advertisement (in ourpaper 1150) in-
stead of throe. Double that thousand one
hundred and iUty copies by six and it gives
you tho number of renders of that adver-
tisement. Those who may want tho ar-
ticle so advertised know when whero and
how it is to ho sold and attend tho sale to
compote for tho purcha.se of it. "When
John B. Odell was sheriff ho proforrod
rather than to write threo copies to pay
and did pay us out of his own pocket to
publish several sherilV sales in our paper.
Interested parties cannot suppress that ad-
vertisement the rain cannot hide it the
people cannot help but hear of it even if
they do not read it themselves. Jsow there
is the two picturos which shows tho most
justice to tho poor victim who may fall into
the hands ot tho law or the minor in the
hands of a rascally guardian.
