THE NEWS.
.tf. fFrom the Loao Star.
J Haeiiisbdeo Dec. 2d 1851.
u G. AY. Crawford Esq Dear Sir Yours
jof the 27th. was duly received. I am much
Jpleased to find you feel an interest in our
tit ail road and trust you will be able to con-
Svince the citizens of jour county that it
f"would be to their interest to tarn their atten-
tion towards it; fori can assure them that
twenty miles at least of this road will be
completed and tbeshrdl whistle heard upon
It longTjcfore any other road will bo com-
menced leading to your county.
In answer to your first inquiry namely :
Where will the company probably cross the
-Brazos River in case it should evteud the
load? I would reruartthatlhaengineerkas
not Esyetmado the necessary examinations
for tie company to come to a conclusion. It
will require a very close and elaborate one
todp so especially as regards the river bot-
toms and banks; and in deciding upon a
point they doubtless will be influenced to
raririo3iljrr-.cri':jJ:scmenis pHired liy
the owners of property on tho different routes
that mayibe proposed. Some propositions
have already been made to them. I am of
we opinion cney win cross me ru er uuivt ceil
Jialston's and icoct islana t ernes.
Secondly. You ask-what-we estimate the
cost of the road per mile.
The enztneer's estimates are made up on
actual contracts entered into bj- the cornpa-
jiy for all of the principal materials and the
grading consequently they cannot be far
lrom correct.
He estimates tie cost for the first thirty
miles S7.800 per mile in running order: this
include the furniture for tie road depots
"water stands &c
I will here subjoin an extract from the
engineer's report. The following estimate
"will cover the cost of the first thirty milesrof
the road built substantially ami ol the best
materials and put in good working order :
Graduation" ------- $19300
Superstructure ------ 1G0.343
jUotrre Power and Equipment - - 272 JO
Depots Engine House and Tools - l(j100
Engineering AgeucicsA Contingencies 10451
-'Total $23401)0
Heiug 700 per mile.
Tbe plan of superslrudzrc estimated for is as
follows z
"A T rail of the best jF.ngIis.li iron weigh-
ing 47 lb. to the yard laid upon Post Oak and
lied Cedar $ros lies 2iU7 tu the uiie and
islcncd wUi wrought iron chain and hook-
headed spikes of the best quality."
The engineer contends. Uiis u ill be equal to
the liest uortkern roads.
We must recollect howeverv after thirty
miles we not only strikcta country more un.
dulatitigbct hnetlie river and river boltoni-
to encounter? which will increase the cost of
the road. Your cnuutr e-peciilly is much
more rolling t!ian this orl'ort Ucnd. You could
tliererore add say 8120(1 extra per mile for
(Trading crossing creeks kc which would
make the co-t of ihoroud through your county
"33;5e2'Ie-mJLiu-iiiiL operation? exclusive oC
the cost of crossing the lirazos luirf. 'Wrnt-f
let me here nsk you How mil this compare
with cost of roadt in other p-irts of the Uni-
ted States and Europe. In Masvtclra-eltK
they cost per S3 W'OO " other E istern itate
S24.000 ; Mew York$5G 000 : New Jersey and
Pennsylvania S40000 ; Michigan Ohio and
Indiana SI 1000 The roads built in the three
last mentioned States arc mostly of cheap
strap iron or were at the time the abo caver-
ages vt ere made. In England Sl'j.OOu per
mile; Belgium SS0.O0O; Frame S107.000:
Germany 40000; (owing to the low price
of labor and hind) and Prussia $47000.
In yo ur county j ou ha e the timber (post-
oak and cedar) in abundance tor the construc-
tion of roads.
Thirdly. At nhat time do we contemplate
having the road finished to the rii er J
This question would be difficult to answer
at tiiis time. As our contracts arc only made
for thirty miles this will not take us to' the
river unless the company should decide upon
running in at or near Richmond w hieh is en-
tremcly doubtrul ; hut as I stated in my former
letter I am satisfied they will be di-posedto
push the work on to the river within the points
designated aboie without intermission provided
they receive from the citizens upon tho route
sufficient encouragement.
Our charter requires us to hare 20 milc3 in
running order by the lltli of February next.
The President of the company writes on the
tli ultimo as follows: "We by no means
give up the point that we can coinplcto twen-
ty miles by the 11th Feb." We understand by
this if there should be a failure i.i completing
this much it will be in consequence of our
not getting the road ready for the reception of
the iron; and if this should be the case it will
bo owing entirely to the impossibily of pro-
curing a sufficient number of hands and in
view of this difiieulty wehaic for the safety
of the company (without their instructions
however) written to our Senator requesting
him to ask of the Legislature an extension ot
'twelvemonths. We also to guard against it
xaisedthe wages of our hand the first of this
month from $15 to $20.
As regards the ability of the company to ex-
tend the road I would remark that if the stock-
holder of to-day were notable to complete
more than thirty miles it docs not follow that
the company w oull not have the ability to ex
tend the road thirl' sixty or even one hun
dred miles by the acquisition of neiv stock.

Bat I would much prefer seolii"; $ 1000 sul-
scribed by citizens oi the coniitry than S-000
by foreign cajiitalists it ould "be more to the
interest of the road.
You will please excuse thi long letter ; but
asyoulcela deep interest in the enterprise
I should feel an equal ono in ghing jou all
