K. M. Millican Senator from the couuties
of Leon Robertson. Brazos and Burleson
has tendered his resignation to the Execu-
tive tad that it has been accepted. The
Oorernor has suggested to the Legislature
tile propriety of passing a law directing the
election to be held after five days notice
for the returns to be made to the Chief
J natives in three days and eight days after
the election far the returns to be made to
the Chief Justice- of Robertson county and
that he be authorized to receive the returns
and give the necessary certificate. He
thiaks that in twenty days the vacancy
might thus be filled.
A bill has passed both houses and become
a law for holding the election .

favor of it. The derangement and confu-
sion and often miscarriage of mail matter

Our citiiens residing near the Rio
Grande have suffered much from the facil-
ity with which slaves escape across the
frontier. As this question involves our
relations with Mexico a foreign power the
remedy is beyond the control of our State
Legislature. We are glad to observe that
the necessary steps are being taken to bring
this matter before the Foderal Government
in an imposing form. The subject has
been before the House committee ou.Ecde-
ral relations for some time. On Tuesday
Mr. Murrah chairman of that committee
presented a preamble and resolutions rc-
uraesting our Senators and Representatives
W Congress to urge upon our Government
necessity of negotiating a treaty with
lexico providing for the extradition of

The Senate on motion of McCulloch re-
fused to recede from ite ameidment to (he
bill to pay the oompany of volunteers called
into service by the Executive and moved
the appointment of a committee of Confer-
ence. McCulloch Burroughs and Paschal were
appointed.
INAUGURATION.
Pirkey and Martin were appointed onthe
part of the Seuate on the joint committee
to make arrangements for the inauguration.
On the part of the Honse Brown Iocke
and Burks have been appointed.
ORDERS OF THE DAY.
After much discussion the bill to estab-
lish a State University and the substitute
of Taylor of Cass viz : to set apart fifty
leagues of land for the endowment of two
Universities were on motion of Mr. Stock-
dale re-referred to the committee on Str.te
Affairs with instructions allowing t to
report a bill to establish a University if
sufficient funds for the purpose are found
in the Treasury.

to arrest the party Is it surprising that our
citizens should teel disposed to rid themselves of
this low and dangerous class of Mexican Peons
when scenes like these are transpiring around us."
The attempt to plice the citizen who
sought fo remove this abuse in the same
category with Kuow-Nothings kc. ia
simply dictated by falsehood and malice.
The event took place before Kuow-Xothing-isra
was heard of in the State and was
generally engaged in by the citizens from
a desire to preserve the proper police of
our negroes. It was the same spirit which
caused the meeting in Swenson's building
a year ago where Hon. James Wilson pre-
sided aud which also resulted in the ap-
pointment of a vigilance committee.
Galveston Civilian. Mr Adolphe
Menard has recently become connected with
the Civilian. Mr. Meuard is a clever gen-
tlouian and we take pleasure n welcoming
him iuto the fraternity.
Bb.vzobia Scqau Cane. The editor of
the Columbia Democrat says that be had
bceu presented by Mr. Campbell a plauter
of that tjuaty with a cunc containing
twenty-threo joints. Brazoria is a wealthy
county and sugar growing is a rich business.
Heavy Uains. From all parta of the
State we hear of high waters floods aud
freshets. The showers seem to have ceutred
at Brcnhani. The Enquirer of that place
says :
"Ou Friday night and Saturday morning
last more rain fell at this place and vicinity
thau fell during two yeais previous all to-
gether." That is a tittle harder than it fell here.
A Fair Hit. The Granada Locomotive
is responsible for the following :
''Another man was killed in Memphis on
Monday last. There is no use in any one
tired of living committing the sin uf sui-
cide now-a days. If he wants to die sud-
denly let him go to Memphis and " bnb
arouud" a little while."

suitable resolutions with reference to the decease
of Brother (J M Norve'.l made the following
report which was unanimously adopted :
Whereas Our members have been invaded by
the grim monster and a beloved brother has
been called from the Lodge terrestrial to the
Grand Lodge above ; and as we would embalm
his virtues in our memories therefore
Rtsohrd That in the death of onr beloved
brother Charles M. Nor veil this Lodge has lot
a worthy and efficient member and a trus C4J
Fellow; one who appreciated our Order for iu
principles and not for any adventitious position
which a connection with it might secure and one
who in al! his sympathies exemplified the benig-
nant and ennobling influence of its teachings the
community has lost a quiet unobtrusive indus-

ing humility give expression to the grief occa-
sioned by our own great loss we do most heartily
sympathise with the bereaved family of our
