Unemployed May Face Higher Taxes
COLLEGE STATION-
Individuals receiving unem-
ployment compensation
during 1982 may face higher
taxes when they figure their
1982 income tax returns..-
This year's new tax law
(the Tax Equity and Fiscal
Responsibility Act) lowered
the unemployment compen-
sation base amounts for in-
come tax purposes effective
with the 1982 tax year says
an economist with the Texas
Agricultural Extension Ser-
vice Texas A&M University
System.

QUESTION: My sister
recently posset! nwny
following n long illness. She
was on SSI ami I have
notified Social Security to
stop her checks. These
checks were deposited
monthly into a savings ac-
count. Should I notify her
bank?
ANSWER: Yes you should -as
soon ns possible. This will
permit the bank to return any
payments received after her
death.
QUESTION: I am going
into the hospital soon for an
operation and likely will
receive pathology services.
Docs Medicare hospital in-
surance cover these ser-
vices? ANSWER: These charges
arc not paid by your Part A
(Hospital Insurance). While
you arc in a qualified
hospital Medicare Part B
(Medical Insurance) can pay
100 of the reasonable
charge for services by
doctors in the fields of
pathology an radiology even
if you haven't met your
annual medical insurance
deductible. Because the full
reasonable charges are paid
they do not count toward
meeting your $75 deductible.

1982 Is $18000 Which is $7000
less than last year. For all
other taxpayers except
married individuals filing
separately the base amount
is $12000 for this year or
$8000 less than a year ago.
Taxpayers receiving
unemployment compen-
sation must add it to ad-
justed gross income when
figuring their income tax
returns says Dr. Ashley
Lovcll of Stcphcnville. If the
total exceeds the ap-
propriate base amounts
taxable Income is calculated
by including the smaller of
one-half of the amount above

ANSWER: If you arc en-
titled to retirement benefits
on your own work record and
you receive reduced widows
benefits before 62 your own
retirement payment at 05 will
also be reduced.
QUESTION: I have Just
been told that the cause of
pnin In my heel Is from a
"IMnntar wart". I never
heart! of this and wonder if
anything can be done about
such a condition.
ANSWER: Assuming that
you got this diagnosis from n
doctor we wonder why you
didn't ask about treatment
(which now is considered n
medical problem by
Medicare! ). Warts arc very
painful non-cancerous
growths generally under the
weight-bearing part of the
foot. They arc also known as
vcrrucac of "stone bruise."
They occur in the deep layer
of the skin and should have
immediate attention for they
can break down and cause
more to appear elsewhere on
the foot and toes. The pain
sometimes is unbearable at
specific points. Worts affect
people of all ages. There arc
several methods of
eradication and the main
precautions arc not to
destroy normal tissue and to
prevent painful scar tissue
from forming.

sation this year than before
notes Lovcll. He advises

And Answers
We believe that warts are
caused by small virus which
enters the body through a
break in the skin. Children
seem to be more susceptible
to warts than adults but it is
probably because they are
more likely to be involved in
activities where they are
barefooted.

until next year or by step-

penses as medical bills in
1982 says the economist.
Lovcll adds that families
who suffered unemployment
in 1981 as well as this year
should not be surprised to
learn that similar amounts
of income and unem-
ployment compensation in
the two years may result in
different taxable incomes
and income tax liabilities.
So he advises some
careful ycarend planning
that might save tax dollars
at a time when many
families arc suffering finan-
cial hardships.

QUESTION: I have heard
appeals on the radio for blood
donations. I am GH years old
still in excellent health and
am under the Impression that
anyone past 05 cannot give
blood. Is this correct.
ANSWER: Many people
think this is a strict rule but
it is not. If you are in good
health you will need a
written statement from your
doctor each yenr stating thai
you can safely donate blood.
As long as your doctor says
you can donate blood there is
no reason to think age will
interfere. Since many older
people take drugs of one kind
or another it is n good idea to
call before going to your local
blood center to be sure they
can take your blood On some
medications there is a
waiting period before it Is
safe for someone else to use
your blood - some make no
difference at all. Staff will be
able to advise you
(Example: After taking an
antibiotic one must wait one
full week before donating
blood )
