NEW YORK (AP) — The 200th
episode of “Cheers," a mock
scholarly retrospective of Boston
barroom comedy, got the highest
ratings of any prime-time show this
season.
The hourlong NBC special,
moderated by talk show host John
McLaughlin, was seen in nearly
27.5 million homes last week,
receiving a 29.5 rating and a 44
share, the A.C. Nielsen Co. repor-
ted Tuesday.
A rating point equals 931,000
households with television. A share
is the percentage of TV sets in use
that are tuned to a show in its time
period.
"One fourth of all women 25 to
54 in the country watched the
show,” said David Marans, a senior
analyst for the J. Walter Thompson
parently killed her while possessed
by the shadowy, demonic killer
known only as “Bob.” The week
before, “Twin Peaks” had a 7.9
rating and a 16 share.
In the evening news ratings,
ABC won for the 44th consecutive
week with an 11.6 rating; CBS had
a 10.1, NBC a 9.7.
Following “Cheers” in prime
time’s top 10 were CBS’ “60
Minutes,” with a 21.5 rating; “A
Different World,” NBC, 20.0; and
“Designing Women” on CBS tied
CBS’ “Murphy Brown” for fourth
place with an 18.9.
“Empty Nest” on NBC was
sixth with an 18.6; ABC’s
“America’s Funniest Home
Videos" and “Roseanne” tied for
seventh with an 18.5; No. 9 was
CBS’ “Murder, She Wrote" with an
18.4, and NBC’s “Unsolved Mys-
teries” was 10th with a 16.2.
advertising agency.
“To put that in perspective, the
No. 2 show for that group was
‘Roseanne,’ which got a 17.0 (rat-
ing). — or one out of every seven
women."
Overall, NBC led with a 13.7
average rating and a 22 share. ABC
edged CBS for second place by an
eighth of a rating point, or about
745.000 TV homes, with a 12.8
rating and a 21 share; CBS had a
12.0 rating and a 20 share.
NBC said “Cheers” has been the
No. 1 show for six of the season’s
eight weeks. Thursday’s rating also
was the highest for any comedy
series since “The Cosby Show” hit
a 29.8 rating and 45 share on Jan.
12,1989, the network said.
