today one hundred and fifty people
lost1 their lives ° as the result of an
earthquake which destroyed the viU
lage of Masram near Jerusalem No
particulars are at hand further than
that the village was practically de-
stroyed

Get Jim Jeffries Out of Crowd

New York March A detachment
of New York police had a hard time
of it this morningr when they under-
took to pilot Jim Jeffries the heavy-
weight champion through a crowd
from his train and officers say it is a
bigger task guarding him that it was
to look after the comfort and safety
of Presidentelect Taft It only re-
quired six policemen to make a way
for Mr Taft when he left the station
here but today the reserves had to
be called out to repress tlie crowd
that wanted to see Jeffries Jeffries
was in the station and wanted to go
to an auto in Waiting for him but a
great mob filled the streets the sta-
tion and all waiting rooms and even
overflowed into the train shed Jeffr
ries was finally conducted through
the baggage room and with the assist
jfece of the reserves made his way to
the waiting auto

lost their lives in a Seventh avenue
house which burned at an early hour
this morning The fire originated in
an undertaking establishment located
on the first floor and the flames
burst from the upper windows so
quickly after discovery that little
time was left to arouse the sleeping
inmates of the house The fire is
believed to be the work ot the Black
Hand as the airshaft was soaked with
pil Many daring rescues were made
by the firemen A number of the vic-
tims were found in a kneeling atti
tude as if they died praying

was the first witness in the Standard
trial today He was asked to identify
the Alton tariffs It is expected to
prove by him that the Alton railroad

besieged David Brenninger in a barn

After the posse departed Brenninger
came out and amused himself by
shooting his Winchester rifle The
neighbors who are terrified tele
phoned the officers who renewed
tne seige Brenninger1js said to be
crazy and has been terrorizing the
neighborhood by shooting at people
driving alongthe road In front of his
house
Later About 10 oclock this morn
ing Brenninger sent word that he
was ready to surrender He appeared
inifrdnt of his house and gave up his
arms None of his family were in-
jured though his housewas literally
perforated with bullets as the result
