the Dakotas Said to Be the
Worst Spell Since 1889

Minneapolis Minn Jan 5 Two
deaths and one neardeath are report
ed today as the result of the blizzard
in this section In the Dakotas the
thermometer registers thirty degrees
below zero which is decidedly the
coldest spell of the present winter
General Walker a rancher was frozen
to death today while returning from
town near Judith Gap Mont A farm-
er named Issakson was frozen to
death w hile driving near Lake Chetek
Wis Oscar Melehorn started to walk
twelve miles to Dodgen N D last
night and his partly frozen hands and
feet were amputated here today The
storm prevailing in the Dakotas is
said to be the worst since in 1889
Zero Weather In St Louis

St Louis Mo Jan 5 A sleet
storm pervailed here all last night
and the street car and wire services
have been badly handicapped Many
minor accidents on the ice and slip-
pery sidewalks aie leported The
river is clogged with the biggest ice
gorge in years and boats are menaced
Zero weather is predicted for tonight
Reports from over tlie southwest show
the heaviest sto rms in years North
Texas reports the heaviest snow-
storms in many years

ceived here today indicate that the
Middle West country is in the grip
of the most seveie storm of recent
years Enormous damages are report-
ed from Iowa and Nebraska because
of the intense blizzards Many towns
in Iowa are short of coal and the suf
fering is intense Traffic in all this
section is badly delayed Many of
the schools in Omaha have been
closed because of the extreme weather

ministration resolution calling for a
congressional investigation of the Bal
lingerPmchot controversy was in-
troduced in both houses of congress
simultaneously today Jones of Wash-
ington introduced the resolution in
the senate and Humphrey of Wash-
ington offered it in the house The
measure is in the form of a joint res-
olution lequlring the signature of the
president to make it effective

ing with the liquor traffic Organized
labor will again piesent the eight

Minneapolis Minn Jan 5 Bulle-
tins were posted by the Chicago Mil-
waukee and St Paul lailroad officials
this morning telling the trainmen that
the supply of coal is short for both
railroad and commercial supplies and
ordering that coal must be handled in
preference to everything offered for
transportation except livestock At
the same time reports from the two
Dakotas and Minnesota show that ex-
treme cold weather is prevailing and
there is certain to be much suffering
because of the scarcity of coal
