ociate Forester Potter Would Con
Fserve the Good Old Summer Time
ignorance of a Senator
Washington D C IMarch 7 Heres
a new idea in conservation Asso-
ciate Forester Potter proposes to con-
serve the good old summer time
Away up on the mountain tops in
the National Forest Reserves Potter
tells Secretary Wilson that there are
any number ot winding lakes and crys
tal streams fringed with cool woods
that would make ideal rest cures for
residents of our west metropolises
His scheme is to provide for the poor
ly paid and overworked slaves of cap-
ital at the cost of about 5 per an-
num tracts of nature which they may
fence in and use for their very own
with no restrictions other than the
ten commandments and the regula-
tions of the Forest Service f
Under Potters plan permits would
he issued to applicants good for ten
years unless revoked by the secre
tar3r of agriculture There are now
several special permits issued by the
Forest Service for summer homes and
one fora hotel or club house on the
San Bernardino mountains in Califor-
nia These are good for only a year
at a time The club house permit
however has been renewed for sev
eralyears and has become a quite
permanent institution
Potters new iplan is now passing
under the critical eye of Solicitor
McCabe of the department of agricul-
ture because Secretary Wilson does
not intend starting anything again un-
less he knows itis legal even to the
crosses of the ts Unless the solic-
itors stern regardfor duty compels
him to object the plan should be in
operation before long and the people
of the west will be able to put in
their applications for country seats

The elevator in the southeast cor-
ner of the treasury department build-
ing lands its passengers on the top
floor almost directly in front of the

s y senator stalked majestically toward
the elevator and pushed the fire alarm

rushed up looked around sniffed the
air and finding no fire departed But

minute or two of waiting the senator
rang the fire alarm again Once
more it produced two watchmen on
the run but still no elevator The
senator pacing impatiently backward
and forward watched the two men
searching in corners and apparently
looking around aimlessly After an-
other brief period of waiting the now
thoroughly irate senator rang the fire
alarm bell for the third time Only
one of the watchmen responded this
time but still the elevator did not
come Filled with indignation tire
angry legislator marched up to Archi
tect Taylor and demanded angrily
Whats the meaning of these
Marathon races down the corridors
which always end in this corner and
why in hell is the elevator not run-
ning I have been ringing the bell
for the last ten minutes
With a proper air of contrition Tay-
lor promised to investigate He rang
the elevator bell and the lift ap-
peared immediately Explanations fol-
lowed and the senator left the huild
ing with some ot his pomposity tempo-
rarily deranged
Muckrakers of other days is the
title of a speech to be delivered in
the house within the next few days
by Representative Kahn republican
of California
It is really surprising remarked
Kahn to what lengths the literary
muckflingers went during the earlier
days of our history Washington was
attacked time and time again and
mercilessly too Because he spent
87000 upon the White House he was
roasted to a turn from one end of the
country to the other And it isnt
half finished either the muckrakers
shouted while jumping on him for this
terrible extravagance Mr Roosevelt I

LIFE
Red AdamsHas Been Taken In By
the New York Police Charged
With Swindling
Herald Soecial
New York March 7 If the theory
of the New York police authorities is
correct Charles Red Adams the
notorious swindler confidence man
and all round crook whojs now under
arrest on the charge of using the
mails for swindling operations has
led for years a double life The po-
lice authorities claim to have evi-
dence to prove that Red Adams is
identical with James A Qurric a re-
puted man or wealth who lived a life
of quiet respectability at his magnifi-
cent home within the aristocratic pre-
cincts of Midwood Manor Sheeps
head Bay The evidence so far is
said to ho entiiely circumstantial
but there are certain circumstances
which lend color to the theory of the
police The man who was known
among his neighbors at Midwood as
James A Currie is absent from the
city and his wife asserts that she does
not know where her husband may be
found as he had not communicated
with her for some time Of course
she denies the identity of her husband
with Red Adams Currie was sup-
posed to be very wealthy but nobody
seemed to know the source of his
wealth or anything about his past life
It is said he was frequently absent
from his home remaining away for
weeks at a time but nobody remem
planation of his absence or an ac
planation of his abs nee or an ac
count of his travels Concerning the
criminal antecedents of Red Adams
the police authorities are much better
informed and considering the fact
that Adams was known for many
years as one of the most dangerous
crooks it seems strange that the de-
tectives learned so little about his pri-
vate life Perhaps they never made
an effort in that direction

Austin Texas March 5 A motion

in the next day or two Mr Colquitt

why that road does not obey the com-
missions mles and regulations
During tin1 penitentiary investiga-

closed with respect to the Stae Rail-
road and its actual financial status
The expert auditors who traced its
accounts fiom the beginning showed

gregated about 530000 whereas the
books of the system indicated a cost
of about 200000 It was also brought
out that the roads locomotives are
not fully equipped with electric head

adequately equipped with safety
brakes and that other deficiencies
prevent it properly fulfilling its func-
