ed to a good crowd Ladies were ad-
mitted fiee and the house was com-
fortably filled The company tried to
give satisfaction and not only gave
the five act play but worked in a
number of specialties The audience
seemed to be pleased with the com-
pany and the play Miss Violet Ver
nell is the leading woman and her
work was very acceptable The com-
pany will appear every night this
week giving a new bill at each per-
formance

Railroad Equipment Painters Have
Formed a Local Union With
Good Membership
The railroad equipment painters
employed in pajnting cars coaches
and other finishing work and employ-
ed here have just formed a union
and begin business with a good mem-
bership Palestine has credit for be-
ing one of the best organized towns
in the way of labor unions ot any
town In Texas

Four lies Additional Sewer Mains to be Put-
Down in North Palestine
The contract for additional sewer
mains was let this morning by Man-
age V I Wilson of the Palestine
Sewer company Tinehart Jackson
of San Antonio being the successful
bidders having in the lowest bid
The deal was closed at 10 oclock and
the agreement provides that active
work shall begin by April the 20th
The contract piovides for the laying
of practically four additional miles of
sewer mains all north of the I G
N Iracks covering a territory not at
present readied by the sewer With
this amount of additional iniiijs a-
very large number of premises can be
reached and It is thoughtthe major-
ity of people will be glad to have
their piemlses connected up When
completed this will give the city a-
very extensive sewer system a con-
venience that no city can do without
The board of directors of die sewer
company met and approved and ac-
cepted the contract

laid before the city commissioners a
plan for a better fire piotection for
Palestine and an enlarged comparfy
and service that mot the approval ot
the board The plan Includes the
purchase ot an auto machine in
which will be combined a chemical
engine hose cart ladder truck and
places for at least four men who can
be hurried to a fire with all the ap-
paratus necessary to handle a file
Such machines aie being adopted in
the big cities and the major has Ijeen
invited to go to Dallas to observe
practical tests of a machine such as
is Contemplated for Palestine The
plan also carries with it the letention
of one team and hose wagon and the
addition of two raoie paid men The
auto fire wagon under contemplation
will be a powerful machine capable
of making fast time over our dirt
stieets and will be a combination
machine of great capacity for fighting
tires The chemical engine feature
will be of the latest pattern and will
be capable of continuing and extin-
guishing most fires without the use
of water In cases wheie it is neces
sarj to use water a thousand feet of
hose will be convenient with hooks
ladders etc for immediate use
This equipment it is expected
will he ready to be installed as soon

as the new fire house is ready for oc-
cupancy and this will not be very
long because work is soon to start on
the building
It was explained that the lower fire
rate to be secured by uptodate equip-
ment would more than pay for the
necessary investment which will be
something like C000

Tom Gairett formerly of TjW but
now of Chicago is In the city Gar-
rett is known as the pecan king be-
cause he practically controls the pe-
can market of the world They print
all soits of things about Garrett most
of them not true For instance it
was said of him a few weeks ago that
lie was a Mexican war veteran that
he had seen service in Egypt and had
a storehouse full of trophies from
these wars To have served in the
Mexican war he would now be an old
man perhaps eighty or ninety at the
least But Garrett is the joungest
rooster at about fortyfive or fifty you
ever saw and as handsome as he was
when he was but twenty He is an
old chum of the Herald men and a
rattling good fellow who is making
good in liis especial line
