THE GOOD OLD SUMMER TIME
There is something radically wrong
in a religious system which practically
closes its house of worship for three
months of the year If public devo-
tion is a duty one Friday evening why
may it he neglected on other Friday
evenings This is primarily a ques-
tion for rabbis to answer and remedy
If doors can be closed in summer be-
cause of heat they can be closed in
winter because of cold or for any
other reason of personal convenience
Christians show us that it is possible
to hold services all the year and the
Jew also can do the possible If pub-
lic worship is a benefit its omission for
a period must be a detriment
BIBLE READING
The conflict between those who ac-
cept the Bible as the very word of God
and those who consider it the work of
man has obscured a view of the book
which friend and foe may take in com-
mon The earth may not have been
created in six days yet all must ad-
mire the sublime simplicity of the
Genesis story the ten commandments
may not have been carved in stone by
the hand of Deity but as comprehen-
sive statements of moral law they are
unequalled David may not have been
the author of the psalms which bear
his name but nowhere else have mans
highest emotions had such perfect ex-
pression Ruth and Naomi may be
characters in an oriental novel yet the
story of their devotion would be no
THE JEWISH HEJRAIJX
less charming This view of the Bible
ignoring alike the claims of inspiration
and the attacks of tho higher criti-
cism implies neither lack of reverence
for its spiritual worth nor bring belief
in the truth of its narrative If it con-
tains something besides articles of
faith and incidents of history if its
pages are a rich mine of thought and
sentiment the duty and value of its
study become unquestioned
THE COMING LIGHT
A Baptist preacher holding a chair
in the University of Chicago has writ-
ten a book in which he denies the di-
vinity of Chrfist Naturally this creat-
ed a stir in the Christian world and a
demand that he withdraw from that
denomination With this quarrel we
as Jews have nothing to do For
twenty centuries we have been criti-
cized and condemned persecuted and
massacred for holding the views of
this Chicago professor Missions are
still being conducted to convert us
It should occur to those behind such
movements that when men like Taft
Foster Elliot and Hale do not accept
the theology of the trinity that the
position of the Jew deserves respect
and not prejudice
THE JEWISH HOME
The home life of the Jew has been
a fruitful theme with poets and prose
writers The fact seems accepted that
it lacks nothing of the ideal The in-
frequency of divorce the fidelity of
spouses and the devotion of parent
and child have marked the lives of
Jews Whether this was due to se
eluded position or religious influences
it is true that modern conditions are
of opposite tendency So far no radi-
cal change has occurred but the Jew-
ish home is no longer what it was
Men now hurry to the club women
count card parties scarcely second to
their children and youth is impatient
for the dance and theatre Of course
there are exceptions hut the condi-
tion described is general and growing
To know this fact is to fight it How
can the Jewish home be made attrac-
tive so that parents and children will
spend their leisure in its precints
ABOUT THE HERALD
The number of requests we are re-
ceiving for sample copies is very grat-
ifying to us inasmuch as it indicates
that the many friends and well wish-
ers of the Herald are speaking favor-
ably of it to their relatives and friends
in other cities and inland towns
As we have frequently stated it is
our purpose to make the Jewish Herald
the family paper for the Jews of Texas
We shall fill its pages with the doings
of the Jews of Texas and other Jewish
literature that is calculated to be of
general interest to the Jewish reader
and to raise and maintain that high
standard of our young people in par-
ticular
Wo desire the good winn and coop-
eration of all our coreligionists all over

the family and will be especially
adapted to the young men and women
