ROUNDUPS
A WellPosted Cattleman Talks of the
Future Prospects
Tb6 Calf Crop This Year GreatT than That ot
18831 he Business Getting Down
to Basinets Points
Col H H Campbell superintendent
of the Matador companyis in the city
having just come down from the com
panys ranch In the Panhandle He
brings the usual good report of the
condition of Panhandle cattle saying
that they are in better fix generally than
they have been for years The rains in
all that section and extending far out
on the plains have been unusually
seasonable and as a result the range
is as good as it cnuld be Iu conver-
sation with a Gazette reporter Col
Campbell expressed himself as highly
pleased at the outlook for the cattle
business
I regard it brighter now he said
j than It has been for years and I be
lieve from his time on It will be muoh
better than it has been for several
years Dast The market this year I
think will even up muoh better than
it did last year and
cattlemen will come out
with from S2 to S3 more per head for
their beef cattle than they did last year
Of course there will be times even this
year when the runs of cattle will be such
that there will be a glut and prices will
go down but on the whole the average
will be a decided improvement on 1889
How is the calf crop In Texas this
year asked the reporter
It is very heavy fully 15 per cent
greater than it was last year That is
the indications are that it will be that if
not more The percentage last year was
not much if auy over 50 per cent but
this year I expect it will roach C5 or 70
per cont
Are there as many she cattle in Texas
now as there was last year
I believe there is The reports of the
great thinning out of cows last season I
think wBjS exaggerated You oould hear
now and then of a company shipping
thousands of cows to market but when
you got at the facts of the case you would
have found that they wore spared cows
and did not cut down the breeding stock
at all Xo doubt there were a great
many she cattle sold but the most of
them were from West and Northwest
Texas South Texas did not Join in the
stampede and has more cows this year
than last year Yes I believe the calf
crop is larger this year than that of last
year
Doyou think the general supply of
cattle is as large this year as it has
been
Xo I do not but the shortage is
not in Texas as much as in other sec-
tions For instance this year we found
no trouble In putting 10000 head of cat-
tle when it would have been some time
back impossible to place 1000 head The
cattle from the maturing pastures of
Kansas Nebraska Iowa and other seo
tious have been sold outand they will
have to be supplied from Texas New
Mexico nnd Arizona Kansas is buying
Texas cattle to breed and in turn Ne-
braska is buyinc from Kansas tho oattlo
that state bought from Texas Iowa
and other feeding states aro buying
heavily in New Mexico So you see the
great West is being drawn on to supply
tho shortage in the feeding states which
was caused by the wholesale marketing
of all kinds of cattle last year The
snpply of cattle in the United States is
not as large as It has been but the short-
age is greater in the feeding states than
on the range
How will the Indian Territory men
come out in view of their having to evao
uate that country
They will not be as heavy losers as it
was at one time claimed they would
Very luckily for them the order to va-
cate came in a favorable year when the
grass was fine so that cattle could bo got
in shape and at a time when th cattle
market was taking an upward turn If
they had to go it was very fortunate that
the time for their going was not fixed at
an earlierdat < j By fall large numbers
of the cattle then will be in good fix nud
will be sold at better figures than the
s me class of cattle would have sold for
last year
You think then colonel that the
pro pects for the cattlemen are enoour
aging
1 feol that they are The cattle in-
dustry is now getting down to a business
basis Free grnss is gone the Indian
Territory is goingand cattlemen can npw
calculate and are calculating bow much
it will cost them to raise a calf up to
beefhood It used to be the case that
but few if any cattlemen could tell what
it cost to raise a yearling calf now it is
different and cattle buyers kuow or
will knew when they come to buy my
cattle just how much it co < t me to raise
them and they will know bow much I
can afford to sell them for The hap
hazzard style has gone and the cattle
business is settling down to business prin-
ciples And it will be the best for all
parties concerned more satisfactory in
all particulars
Cnttle In the Territory
Mr John Morcbant passed through
e city yesterday morning en route from
the Indian Territory to West Texas In
a brief conversation with a Gazette xe
iorter he stated that cattle we e boom-
ing so far as condition was conoerned
In that portion of the Indian country
where his interests are Ho told the old
but pleasant story of fine grass good
rains and fattening cattle on every bill
and in every valley He had just shipped
two train loads of fat beeves to Kansas
City nnd would have as many more
ready for shipment In n short time Mr
Merchant has been appointed Jnditf
Territory agent for the Texas livestock
commission company and no better man
for thnt sootion could have been ap-
pointed

Carrying the News
B G Head general manager of the
Head Investment and Brokerage com-
pany of Colorado has just returned to
Denver from Texas He reports the
condition of the iaitl business very good
in the section visited by him in fact
nlong the line to Denver grass beeves
are sel ing from S290 to 5390 There
is a general inquiry from seotions ot the
country in reference to cattle that Is sur-
prising and the tenor of these inquiries
relate solely to cattle investment The
only portion of the country where the
range is poor is in Southwestern Texas
and the eastern part of Arizona where
fortunately cattle can live on less He
also reports that there is not so many
catte In the Cherokee Strip as was es-
timated and believes that three weeks
active market would clean them out
Fine Cattle
Henry Geld a Texas cattleman has
been In the valley for several weeks gath-
ering up all the Hereford bulls he could
find in the interest of a great Panhandle
cattle company He has seotired twenty
one head ot fine blooded youngsters from
the Miller herd and leaves with them to-
day for Northern Texas Mr Geld con
siders the Hereford the bost beef stock
in the world and states that they
are uniformly gentle in disposition ex-
cellent rustlers on the range and good
travelers on the road He will probably
return before long for some more of our
superior valley cattle
E F Kellners foreman started yes-
terday for Tonto Basis with a bunoh of
twenty Hereford bulls purchased from
J L Fisher Tonto has had a number
of Herefords on its ranges for several
years and the cattlemen are more than
pleased with them Arizona Republi-

The commissioner of Indian affairs has
received a telegram from the governor oL
Oklahoma that trespassing cattle from
the Iowa Indian reservation are destroy-
ing the crops of the Oklahoma Bottlers
The officials have notified the cattlemen
occupying grazing lands in the Iowuf
reservation that if further damage to
Oklahoma settlers is done by their cattle
they will be summarily removed from
the Indian Territory
Several large herds of cattle passed up
the trail last week and Sheridan lake was
without water for several days The
thirsty animals were almost famished
Just pow the bulk ot the cattle are being
whined from the Panhandle country to
Denver at a high rate of speed pas-
senger trains aro being sidetraoked to
give the stock as speedy transportation
as possible It is estimated that 70000
bead will be shipped from Texas this
season lField and Farm
It is very likely that the quarantine
against Taias oattlo will in the end
prove a blessing iu disguise to the stock
owners of that stnte Lett without an
outlet the Lone Star stockmen have been
forced to seek a foreign market for beef
with tho result that they will net better
prices than they secured in the best days
of the cattle business Two ressed beef
