SHOULD BK WELL KKPRESENTED
Denver News Colorado ought to send
a strong delegation of business men to
the Fort Worth deep water convention
Every state and territory west of tie
Missouri on the Atlantic slope is inter-
ested in the purpose for which it is called
Denver in particular should respond In
force As tne metropolis and distributing
point of tho mountain country her peop e
have special reasons for cooperation lu a
work of so much importance to her future
commerce Tnen apart from these more
potent considerations we should
not forget the response made by
the citizens of Fort Worta to the invita-
tion of Denver the last of March As
men are affected by selfinterest a sug-
gestion heretofore made in these columns
will be repeated as an additional reason
why the arid region should cordially join
bands with Texas in support of a prac-
ticable harbor oa the gulf The next Con-
gress will be asked to redeem the center
of the continent by Inaugurating a sys-
tem of lrrljaton by mean ot 6toraze
reservoirs The same boJy will
be appealed to for a deep out-
let on tne coast ot Texas The sections
concerned in both of these national Im-
provements are destined to have many
ties In common This will cment a
mutual alliance The west will support
Ttxas with all the Influence it can com-
mand and Texas will respond with a will
in aid of e movement in which she also
has an interest that is far from being re-
mote The Fort Worth convention ot
July 10 should be kept in mind and this
northern country should be wel repre
sented
AN INTERESTED CRT
Galveston Tribune Tae Austin Dis-
patch paper that would not know a
subsidy it it found it lying in the road
has caught the Aransas lasj fever and Is
almost as violent as Tub Fort Worth
Gazette In a recent Issue the Dis-
patch said Deep water ot Aransas
Pass means deep water for the entire
state unencumbered by wharf monopo
lies and cormorant corporations This
Is answered by a Fort Worth paper that
has not been teen in the Interests ot the
Aransas Pass job the Democrat which
says It means no such thing
Aransas Pass is even now owned by a
cormorant corporation with whom rests
tht power of lorming a monopoly more
oppressive than that which Indicts Gal-
veston It Is thla syndicate and their
wealth that is directing so much attention
10 the Pass The Dettocrat lets the cat
cat ot the bag Tho Demscrat knows
whereof It speaks s It is on the ground
the very birthplace of this wonder-
ful enUusiasm tor deep water at
Aransas Pass It knows that the men
who compose the modopoly are not so
much for deep water for Texas as they
are tor the Ailing of their own deep
pockets It is only a few years ago that
Fort Worth was howling itself hoarse for
deep water at Sabine Pass but at that
time the howlers were not Interested in
30000 acres of land and water at Aransas
Pats The mas who does not know what
all this hurrah about deep water at Aran

know
A ROUSINO MEETING
Corslcana OOierver The deep water
convention will meet at Fort Worth on
the 10th of Jaly It will be a rousing
meetine We hope good result will
grow out of it It the wisdom of Texas
can be concentrated on the moat feasible
plan the necessary aid will be secured A-
long pull and a strong pull all together
for the general good ot the state and the
northwest is very important
SHOULD SEND A DELEGATE
Imbree Enterprise Anumuer of citi-
zens of Fort Worth T x have called on
interstate deep water convention to meet
at that city on July 10 18S3 to discuss
the advantages of the various harbors and
to provide ways and means to accomplish
the work of securing deep water at the
most available point They suggest that
the boards of trade or other organizations
of business men in the various cities ot
Colorado New Mexico and Texas select
delegates to this convention We all
bave an interest in this matter and Ein
bree should send a delegate
TWO OPINIONS
Hillsboro Kefiector The hogglshness
ot Galveston In the deep water matter Is
apparent in her most selfish demand
Galveston or nothing Fairfield Ej
corder
The Recorder should not permit the
organs of the Aransas Pass speculation to
mislead it into such ridiculous expres-
sions There has Deen no 6uch demand
made by Gweston ss it states The
people of Galveston have only asked from
the start that tho appropriations for
harbor improvements for the state
be concentrated at one point and
while like most others who have investi-
gated the subject and especially the great
mass of impartial and intelligent citizens
they doubtless realize that it is Galves-
ton or nothing they have been willing
to leave that to be decided by disinter-
ested authorities and let Galveston take
her ckances with other points They
simply want tho deep water question
settled so that they can know and the
people of Texas can know whether or not
Texas ii to have a seaport and if so
where it Is to be
THE ONLT VTAY
Welear Gimlet Tne Floresvllle Chron-
icle says it would not be fair to concen-
trate all the appropriations for deep water
on one place and taat it will never be
done It may never be done but that Is
the only sure way for Texas to get deep-
water One deep water port tor this
state would be sufilclent at present and
to attempt to have more than one would
require so much money that we could
not hope for national appropriations suf-
ficient It would be a good thing for the
people to have several deep water porte
but It would be better to have one than
none
DEEP WATER THE WANT
DicaturPost Alter all that has been
said and done on the deep water question
on the coast ot Texas the matter whe
simmered down to all there Is in it is
about like this Tho two million people
in Texas as well as the people of Colo
rado care very little about what point or
points on the coast is selected to make this
deep water DeeD water is what they
want Fact ie deep water at Galveston
the mouth ot the Brazos and Aransas
Pass will hardly accommodate the output
and input of the commerce ot an empire
llk Texas to say nothing of tho great
111 lUltll LiiULLU 118 AAfAfcUJUiJ
Coleman Voice If there is to be a
deep water convention at Fort Worth
every town and county In Texas should
be represented in order to prevent a syn
dicate of speculators Imposing on the
country The convention should be or
ganizsd on the basis o rcprosentaiicn
adopted by the state convention and the
points of merit of the different localities
on the coast tor which favor is souzht
should be represented by recognized
scientific experts whose reputation as en-
gineers is at stake Instead of by enthusi-
asts for certain favorite localities or the
representatives and agents ot certain
private enterprises
GUYE3TON THE MOST AVAILIBLE
Kavasota Tablet The Corslcana Od
serversays Let Texis hold her deep
water convention in Fort Worth har-
monize her own citlzsns and then if
need be send a strong delegation to Den-
ver Texas has four only available
points each one asserting its claim to be
the only point at which it is possible to
set deep water at reasonable cost Each
place has Its friends and backers and it is
not at all likely that anyone of the places
would surrender Its claims without
reluctance As long as so many places
are contending for supremacy it will be
difflcalt to harmonize Texas citizens es-
pecially those that are contiguous to the
coast The Tablet believes Galveston to
be the best and most available point for
deep water but It cant convince the
friends ot Sabine Pass moath of Brazos
and Aransas Pass that It Is right
NO MATTER WHiRE
Tyler Record Deep water for Texas
whether obtained by national or state ap-
propriation or by syndicate Jiflerson
or Galveston Sabine Pass or any other
place and the convention that votes it
may be held at Denver or Dallas or Fort
Worth or Kallamazoo Buggocea or
Jerusalem We dont care where when
or how the thing Is done but omy let the
agitation contiaue and let it result In
deep water at some point and the sooner
the better
TANGIBLE RESULT HOrED TOR
DeKsloFlag I i3 to be hoped that
the deep water conveation to assemble at
Fort Worth July 10 will have a tangible
result The northwestern states are in-
terested in and will assist to establish an
adequate harbor on the Texas coast if
the people ot this state cm come to an
agreem nt as to where that harbor is to
be constructed
GALVESTON II NOT TEXAS
Belton Jqurnal Galveston Is a nice
town but Galveston Isnt Texas not by a
milldam site The people of Texas want
deep water on the coast and they are for
the most available point be that point
Galveston the month of the Brazos Sa-
bine Pass or Aransas Pass Galveston is
right In pressing her claims but those
other places are entitled to consideration
and we of the interior mean to see to it
that all have fair play Bulldozing wont
win Thats all
THE TRESS NEARLY A UNIT
Dallas TimesHerald The presi of the
state Is nearly a unit In favor of a good
representative attendance at the Fort
Worth deep water convention on July
10 and a majority seem to regard Aran
sas Pass as the most favorable point on
the coast for a concentration ot effort
ARANSAS PASS THE PLACE
Paris Tidings That Texas must have
deep water at somo point on its coast-
line is now a maxim Then let ns all se-
lect the most available point and work
unitedly to get it there That point Is
andoubtedly Aransas Piss
WHAT WILE AUSTIN DO
Austin Ditpatch What does Austin
people propose to do about securing
proper representation to the deep water
convention called to meet at Fort Worth
on July 10 The certainty of an early
connection with Aransas Pass invests the
question with peculiar interest just now
and should awake proper spirit ot in-
terest
FAVORS GALVESTON
Overton Sharp Shooter We are In
favor of deep water at Galveston not for
any partlcalar love we have for Galveston
as a city for we consider it the most
felflsh and ungrateful place in the United
States but it is the center ot Texas com-
merce and therefore the most proper
place for a deep water port
THE TORT WILL ENTERTAIN

tion to be held in that city July 10 Del-

TO BOOM NO ONE PLACE
East Texas News A convention has
been called to meet at Fort Worth oa the
lCth ot July to discus the question ot
deep water for Texas It Is not for the
purpose of booming any one place as
against another bnt to discuss the rela-
tive merits of the various places and the
practicability of securing a good harbor
at an eligible point lor the benefit ot the
whole state and to devote the en-
ergies and resources of the people of the
state in that one direction If all local
differences can be reconciled the ques-
tion of deep water will soon be solved
DEEP WATER BADLY NEEDED
North Texas Farmer It Is well to bear
In mind that the deep water convention
will meet in Fort Worth on July 16
Deep water on the Texas coast Is some-
thing needed and badly needed The
people of the state farmers and all to
say nothing of the great west should go
to work earnestly in this matter
DEEP WATER IMPORTANT
Titus Times Deep water for North
Texas is of far more importance to the
inhabitants of this portion of the state
than deep water on the gulf While tha
Iron News looks after Its own section
with a most jealous eye It doea not for-
get the importance of a suitable seaport
for Texas Iron News We not only
want deep water on the gulf but a chan-
nel in the bayou at Jefferson and the
Texas Louisiana and S E from Mobile
where we know there is deep water
ARE THEY APRAID
Overton Sharp Shooter The Galves
ton News is still hammering away at the
deep water question and is showing much
zeal in tie cause It has however up to
this time entirely Ignored our qaestios
in regard to what amount ot benefit has
been secured trom the appropriations
already mide and srlent at Galveston
It woujd be very satisfactory to know
that Texas had got tho benefit of the
former appropriations made for the im
proVcment of Galveston bar
Fort Worth has called a deep water con-
vention to meet July 10 at Fort Worth
The Galveston and Dallas Njws is op-
posed to the conventioa being at Fort
Worth Are they afraid that Fort Worth
will secure the deep water port instead of
Galveston Such jealousies are really
contemptible

ARIOi IIAKLAOTS name is a household rword
wherever the English language is spoken or printed
ITer novels of American life and books of counsel and house-
hold instruction for women hare been circulated by the hun-
dreds of thousands in America and Great Britain and many
of them have been translated into French German and other
European languages
The Sourceiof Her Popularity
Lies in the fact that she produces stirring and absorbing
stories from materials to be found in eyerjday life her
work interests educated and uneducated alike it deals with
those elements of human nature common to all classe and
of interest to all
It is many years since Marion Harland published a
novel and her new story so long and eagerly looked for by
a largo and loyal constituency of readers has bsjui secured
for serial publication in
This new novel A Gallant Fight is one of the
strongest pieces of fiction that Marion Harland has written
A story of absorbing interest and dramatic plot it is in in-
tent a protest against the lax tone of opinion which prevails
in American society regarding the absoluteness and perpetuity
OF THE MAR1IAGE RELATION
This idea is not obtruded nor indeed definitely stated but
the unavoidable conclusion from the semitragic cwrent of
events in the story is that marriage once formed shouldbe
almost indissoluble
The novel contains some striking and unique characters
drawn from life j the descriptions of scenes in the Connecti-
cut Valley and among the Adirondack Mountains are most
charming
A Delightful and Pathetie Love Story
Is mingled with the more intense and dramatic plot that
forms the basis of the novel A Gallant Fight contains
all the elements of an immensely popular story for newspa
per publication
The first installment of this serial will immediately fol-
low the conclusion of the Stevenson story now running in
