Mr. and Mrs. E.F. Campbell circa 1963
Marian Morgan Campbell was reared in
Morgan by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs.
Joshua A. Morgan. Her mother died when she
was six weeks old, and her father, Randolph,
took her to his parents' home. She graduated
from Morgan High School, attended Sam
Houston State Teachers' College, and gradu-
ated from the University of Texas. She met
Elmer in Balmorhea where she went to teach
in 1924.
Elmer and Marian married in 1925 and
moved to Roswell, New Mexico where their
two sons were born. Randolph was born in
1926, and John Ross in 1929, the day of the
stock market crash. The family moved back
to Texas in 1933 and lived in Fort Davis
where Elmer worked for the Texas Highway
Department. He helped survey the first road
to the McDonald Observatory. Marian
taught school.
In 1938, the family moved to Morgan.
Marian's father, Randolph, had blocked in
about 17,000 acres of farm and ranch land
around the original Morgan homesteao, and
Elmer managed it. In the middle 1950's,
Randolph sold a portion of the land, and the
remainder became known as the Campbell
Ranch, as it is today.
The Campbells joined the First Methodist
Church in Morgan, where Marian was active.
An avid gardener, she delighted in growing a
variety of flowers around the ranch house.
Marian was honored for her years of work in
Texas Garden Clubs by having the horticul-
tural library at the Headquarters building in
Fort Worth named for her. Elmer, called "Big
Boy" by his friends, was best known for his
keen sense of humor. He kept family and
friends entertained with yarns he would spin.
Randy, the first Campbell son, graduated
from Morgan High School, ano attended
Texas A&M and Clifton College. When he
was eighteen, he enlisted in the Marine
Corps. He served as a gunner on an aircraft
carrier, and then on a troop ship bringing
boys home from WWII.
When Randy was discharged, he married
Ellen Marie Stephenson of Morgan in 1946...
They lived on the ranch where Randy
assisted his father, and Marie taught school
in Morgan. In 1969 they were divorced.
Randy now lives in Pleasanton, Texas and
operates heavy machinery on constructvion
jobs. Marie still lives on the ranch, and
teaches in Meridian.
Randy and Marie had four children: Cath-
erine (1948); Larry (1950); Carol Ann (1953);
and Thomas Ross (1958). Cathy married
Jimmy Spitzer of Meridian; and they have
two sons, Larry Kurt and Clayt Scott. They
live in Waxahachie where Cathy teaches.
Jimmy operates his own business in Mans-
field. Larry married Betty Allen of Meridian;
and they have two sons, Darel Joseph and
Daniel Allen. They live at Morgan where
Betty is a postal clerk. Larry is employed by
General Dynamics at the Bosque County
facility. Carol married John Heath of Merid-
ian; and they have three children: Brian
Craig, Heather Renee, and Holly Brooke.
They live in Carrollton where John is an
insurance manager. Ross married Vicky
Jenson of Cranfills Gap, and they live
between Valley Mills and Waco. Ross is a
supervisor at Weyerhaeuser in Waco, and
Vicky is a nurse.
The younger Campbell son, John, finished
school in Meridian. He attended Southwest-
ern University and Clifton College. In 1948,
he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps. When he
got his commission, he came home and
married Martha Ann Lomax of Meridian in
1950. He served on an aircraft carrier, and
was on active duty until May, 1952. With the
completion of active duty, he went to Texas
A&M where he graduated. Shortly thereaf-
ter, he moved his family to Dallas, and
became a pilot for Continental Airlines,
where he is still employed.
John and Ann had three children: Marian
Suzan (1952); John Randolph (1957); and
Ouida Jane (1961). Suzan married Patrick
Makins of Lubbock; and they have two
children, Daniel Patrick and Sarah Eliz-
abeth. They live in San Angelo where Pat is
a periodontist. Johnny is a student at Sam
Houston State University. Janie married Jeff
Trentacosta of Dallas. They live in Dallas
where Jeff is a photographer.
Many changes have taken place at the
Campbell Ranch over the years. Elmer died
in 1966, and is buried in the Morgan Ceme-
tery. Marian moved to Dallas to be near her
son and granddaughters. However, she is
happiest when she and her family get togeth-
er back at the ranch.
