land.
This incident demonstrates his faith in the
country: Three and a half years ago when
visibility was not one hundred feet, he was
offered a large body of land at an attrac-
tive price and while inspecting it was over-
taken by a real black duster that forced
him to stay nine hours and a half in one
spot. As soon as his car was pulled out by
horses, and he could reach home, he wired
acceptance of the offer.
Mr. Oliver, today at the age of 80, is per-
sonally managing his 7,000 acre wheat farm.
EDITOR'S NOTE: This sketch of the life
of G. T. Oliver, which was written by his
daughter on the occasion of his 80th birth-
day, describes an important phase in the
beginnings of Panhandle land use and of
wheat farming on the High Plains.
While at Washburn, Mrs. Oliver had a
piano delivered. The box filled with ex-
celsior that the piano was shipped in was
left outside the store. Three of their little
children were playing inside the box when a
fire broke out and they burned to death.
They were Lena, 6 years, Leslie, 4 years,
and Grover, 21 months. They died Feb-
ruary 13, 1892.
