JAMES M. M. PRICE, born 1868 in Florence,
Alabama, was the youngest son of Colonel Caswell and
Mary Ann Adams Price. Colonel Caswell Price was a
veteran of the Civil War, having served with Company
C, 27th Alabama Infantry.
James M. M. lost both his parents before he was
ten; he then moved into the home of his elder brother,
David Martin Price. At the age of 17 he came to Texas
and worked for John Arp of the Latch Community in
Upshur County. For his work plus board and laundry,
James was paid $5.00 per month. On this meager salary
he saved enough in a year to buy a pony. He came to
the Perryville Community in 1890.
In 1891, James M. M. married Victoria E. M.
Smith, daughter of Jonathan W. and Rebecca Wyatt
Smith who lived near Henderson, Texas. Rebecca was
a close friend of General Sam Houston, having
attended many social events with him.
In the early years of their marriage, James M. M.
Price earned a living by hauling logs to the Stamps
sawmill in Wallingville, which later became a part of
Perryville. James used 3 to 4 teams of oxen to haul the
logs. He later became a prosperous farmer in the
Perryville Community and also operated a cotton gin.
Twelve children were born to James M. M. and
Victoria E. M. Price:

Paralee Price, a former major in the Air ForceReserve and presently a counselor in the
Corpus Christi Public Schools.
James M. M. Price helped to organize and was a
charter member of the Woodman of the World Lodge at
Perryville. He and his wife, Victoria E. M. Price, were
actively involved in the civic and religious affairs of the
Perryville Community. They were members of the
County Line Baptist Church which later became the
Perryville Baptist Church.
Victoria E. M. Price died in 1940; James M. M.
lived until 1966, being over 98 years old when he died.
