DR. VIRGIL ELIAS ROBBINS, son of Isham W.
and Eugenia Mae Robbins, was born in Quitman 3
March 1886. He received his early education in the
Quitman Public Schools and after his graduation was
appointed rural mail carrier, holding this position until
1 January 1908. During this time he saved enough
money to enable him to enter Medical College in Dallas
for the fall term beginning September 1908.
After his junior year, Dr. Robbins interned at the
Parkland City Hospital in Dallas and served in this
capacity through his senior year. After graduation he
was appointed superintendent of the Emergency
Hospital. In 1913, Dr. Robbins resigned to open a
private office in Quitman. Shortly after his return to
Quitman he was appointed County Health Officer of
Wood County and served continuously for 18 years.
Ever mindful of civic duties, Dr. Robbins served as
president of the Wood County Old Settler's Reunion
for two years and also served as president of the Quit-
man Lion's Club. He was elected president of the Wood
County Medical Association and presented an
honorary life membership by the Association in
recognition of his many years of service in the medical
profession.
Dr. Robbins gave many years to community ser-
vice throughout his lifetime. He was a member of Quit-
man's first City Council in 1941. After his retirement
from private practice, he was appointed director of the
Wood County Health Unit and held that position at the
time of his death. He was a member of the Quitman
Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years, and a member
of The First Baptist Church of Quitman.
Virgil Elias Robbins was married to Miss Ruby
Thomas, (1889-1935). Their children were:
Paul T., married Coleta Coon
Virgil E., married Maxine-------
Robert Lee, killed in World War II at Anzio,
Italy
Jean Elizabeth, married Ray Brochee
Betty J., married Forrest Kendrick
Dr. V. E. and Ruby Lee Robbins and their son
Robert Lee were buried at Quitman Cemetery. His
death occurred 2 February 1965.

BENJAMIN ROBERTSON, born 18 February
1865 near Jessup, Georgia, came to Wood County in
1881 and settled in the Redland Community. In 1883,
he married Louisa Turner, born 19 August 1870 in
Redland to Dr. J. D. and Louisa Turner.
The Benjamin Robertsons were parents of 11
children:Sarah E., died in infancy
Minor Sidney, died at the age of 19
Fannie Irene, married Clarence Parmer
Ora Alberta, married Floyd Crownover
Daniel B., married (1) Ella Humphreys, (2)
Evelyn Sellers
Maudie E., married H. N. Penix
Garland R., married Mary Lou Hall
James Julian, died in childhood
Vera Louise, married Artie Shaver
Odest Frederick, unmarried
Ben Robertson came to Redland when he was 16,
and except for a brief period of time, spent the
remainder of his life in the community. One of his sons,
Daniel B., born in 1894, said that during his boyhood it
was a common occurrence to find Indian artifacts in all
the fields.
Mr. Robertson engaged in farming and sawmilling
and was a member of the Saint John Baptist Church.
Some of his neighbors were the Moseleys, Riddles,
Halls, Minicks, McGuires, Griffins, Blacks and James
K. Nicholson, who ran a store and was the com-
munity's first postmaster.
