ACU to host UIL contest

ACU will serve as host
Saturday for the annual
University Intcrscholastic
League Solo and Ensemble
Contest.
Dave Pcnnock associate
professor of music and assistant
band director said that ap-
proximately 300 high school band
students from Region II an area
stretching from Wichita Falls to
Abilene will compete in the
contest.
Students in Texas Pennock
explained must play from a
prescribed list of music but may
select their piece from three
classes of difficulty.
Judges selected from across
the state will rate students ac-
cording to precision preparation
dynamics tone and other
predetermined criteria and
performances will receive
ratings from division I (ex-
cellent) to division V (poor).
Students who receive division I
ratings on class I pieces will
receive gold medals and qualify
for the June state UIL contest in
Austin.
This is the first time in a
number of years the contest has
been at ACU Pennock explained.
He said that the contest is a
tremendous recruiting tool
because it gives the high school
students a chance to tour the
campus and look over the various
facilities.
About SO members of the Big
Purple will serve as monitors
during the contest.
Pennock and Trayler have
been preparing for the event
since August.

Milsap morality clause still unsigned
The contract with country-music singer
Ronnie Milsap for an April 10 concert has
been received Students' Association
president Ron Holifield reported at the
Student Senate meeting Monday night.
The SA is sponsoring the concert along
with the Hardin-Simmons University
Student Congress and KFMN radio.
Holifield said the contract was being
approved by several administrators.
"The only thing we lack is for Milsap to
sign the morality clause" Holifield said.
The school requies all performers to sign a
clause saying they will refrain from using
alcohol drugs obscenity or profanity .on
stage.
Also Holifield said that Wes Phillips
junior Bible major would coordinate the
Milsap concert.
Holifield also announced that March 29
had been set as the date for the 10000-
meter run. Sam Priest senior P.E. major
will be in charge of the event.
"It's going to be geared especially
toward the Abilene community" Holifield
said "not that it's not for the students
but we're going to make a big push to
bring in participants from the com-
munity." In other Senate action a committee was
selected to audition Eric Neal White a
candidate for the city council who goes by
the name "Starlight."
White had requested to perform at ACU.
He performs extemporaneous guitar
concerts.
Holifield also reported on his trip last
weekend to meet with President Carter in
Washington D.C.
He was one of 300 student leaders from
across the country and one of 10 from
Texas to be invited.
"It was an extremely productive
meeting" he said.
He said the students met with Carter
Zbigniew Brzezinski head of the National
Security Council and other administration
officials.
They discussed the selective service
system windfall profits tax women's
rights and the recently formed Depart-
ment of Education Holifield said.
Department will sponsor trip to Mexico
The foreign language depart-
ment will sponsor a trip or
Spanish students to Torreon
Mexico this summer from July
12-Aug. 19.
Students will attend classes on
the campus of the Universidad
Autonomos del Noreste or
Autonomous University of the
Northeast.
An Intermediate Spanish
course will be offered for six
hours of credit as well as an
Advanced Conversation course
for three hours credit. Eight
hours of previous Spanish study
are required for the intermediate
course and 16 hours of study for
the advanced.
The cost of tuition and fees
for the four-week trip will be $195
for the three-hour course or $390
for the six hour course.
Students will provide their own
transportation to Laredo and bus
fare from Laredo to Torreon will
be $20. Room and board will be
provided by local families for

Also included in the agenda will
be a four-day weekend in
Guadalajara and students will
be requested to add $250 for
personal expenses.
At the same time students are
visiting Torreon a group of
Mexican students will be enrolled
in classes on the ACU campus.
The Mexican students will be
taking English and cultural
courses similar in content to
those to be studied by ACU
students in Torreon.
Cast selected in
second feature
of Dinner Theater
The cast for "The Miracle
Worker" the second dinner
theater of the season has been
selected.
Jan Jones Patterson will play
Helen Keller and Carol
Moreland will be Annie Sullivan
her teacher.
Kate Keller will be played by
Michele Whitfield and Captain
Keller by John Mann. Brian
Clovis will play the part of James
Keller.
Other cast members include
Roxie Halacacus as Aunt Ev;
Dezarrae Gaines Vinnie;
Thomas Bruner Percy the
butler; Jannie McCormick
Martha;Elliot Bales Dr.
Anagnos; Paul Fromberg the
first man.
Kerry Johnson and Jeff
Berryman arc student directors
for the production.
Dinner tickets for the show will
be $10 and dessert tickets will be
$4.50.
Performances will be March
28-29 April 3-6 and April 10-12.
