degree at ACU.
Also students must take the
freshman and sophomore Bible
survey courses an upper-level Old
Testament course an upper-level
New Testament course Restoration
History and Teaching Ministry.
And students ate required to take a
ministry course of their choke and
either Missionary Principles and
Practice or Ministry of
KecKiiijnion.
But Mankin who will advise the
students taking the program said
those course requirements can be
flexible.
"There is some flexibility that
could be given according to the
person's interests and needs' he
said.
The vocational ministry
certificate was put together this year
for the student who is interested in
( pursuing a certain vocation but also
wants to serve the Lord Mankin
said. "We want you to have some
courses that will help your
ministry."
Students interested in obtaining a
vocational ministry certificate
should contact Mankin who will
advise the students in the program.
Because of the flexibility of the
certificate students can join the
program no matter what their
classification is Mankin said.

Large crowd hears war songs

Artist in residence Charles Nelson
performed an operatic repertoire of
songs called "Songs of War" In
Cullen Auditorium Tuesday nt 8
p.m.
Nelson was well received by a
large crowd that almost filled the
auditorium said Ed George
chairman of the Department of
Music.
"Songs of War" is a collection of
traditional popular songs and songs
from composers like Frank
Schubert Gary Geld and Heinrich
Schtltz.
"These songs look at all aspects
of war and are poignant humorous
and heroic" said George. "I
consider the highlight of the
performance to be the final
number 'To Music It is my
favorite vocal selection because of
the beautiful melody and also the
lyrics arc meaningful. They
accurately reflect my feelings
toward art and music."
Nelson performed 13 songs and
was accompanied by pianist J.
David Brock assistant professor of
music; Blane Hinton assistant
director of bands; and musicians
Jason O'Pry Warren Thaxton and
James Williams.
Nelson has been an artist in
residence at ACU for eight years
and regularly performs on campus.
He has performed in more titan 35
different states with various
symphony orchestras Including
the Dallas Symphony Orchestra
the New Orleans Symphony
Orchestra and the Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra.
Nelson has been a choral
director at ACU and m taught at
East Texas State University m
David Lip!comb College
') Nelson will be on tour In the
Houston area performing at high
schools and several communities
throughout September
In addition to being an artist in
residence Nelson also acts as m
ACU goodwill ambassador when
he travels for his performances
said George.
The Department of Music
presents regular concerts end;
recitals throughout the school year
to provide students with
opportunities to perform and for
educational and artistic benefits
said George.
