Cowboys "treeing" wins
By John Bradshaw
"TREEEEE!" seems to be a
popular phrase around the HSU
baseball diamond these days.
Taken from the popular Morris
Day song "Oak Tree" the
Cowboys are treeing (treeing is a
term for a spectacular play on
either offense of defense) quite a
lot lately. By latest count the
'Boys have won eight straight and
15 of their last 16 games. This is
more than just a hot streak this
may be the best Cowboy baseball
team ever
Before the season Coach Larry
Martindale had said that if this
squad played as a team they
could beat almost anybody. And
they have just about beat
everyone including the number
one ranked Texas Longhorns a
sweep of the Baylor Bears. Other
victims of the current streak in
elude Lubbock Christian College
Southwestern Cameron and the
University of Arkansas at Little
Rock. The only loss in the streak
was a 2 1 extra inning loss to
TCU.
The latest victim and first con-
ference foes UALR went down
last Monday and Tuesday. The
Cowboys crushed the Trojans in
the first two games 10 7 and 8-2
then won two pitching duels the
second day 3-2 and 2-1 .
Hitting is the main reason for
the reversal from the 5-12 start.
The Cowboys have combined
timely hitting (scoring over 150
runs in the last 16 games) with
much improved pitching to turn
things around. Your next ques-
tion may by who's the next vic-
tim? The Cowboys leave for a six
day 10 game road trip over Spr-
ing break including games with
conference opponents UALR and
Centenary and a non conference
double header with Ouachita
Baptist. The only thing these
Cowboys have left to do is just to
keep treeing.
Coach thanks wild and
crazy fans for support
To HSU Students:
On behalf of your basketball
team and coaching staff I would
like to thank you for the support
you have given us this season.
Your presence en masse at our
home games was so meaningful
to us all. One of the main reasons
of having intracollegiate athletics
is to help promote the University
and to have a rallying point for
the University Family and com-
munity. With that in mind I feel
we had a great season. We can
always look back and say if we
did this or that we would have
won more. It's over and there la
nothing we can do now about
that. Be proud of your players-
they are certainly proud of you
their fellow students and wild and
crazy fans that helped us to the
best season in 13 years.
Thanks
Coach Dick Danford
