Cowboys. Buffs
Clash in
Cowboy baseballers close out
the season Tuesday in a double-
header against West Texas State
at Canyon. The Cowboys downed
the Buffs twice here two weeks
ago.
Coaoh Charley Horton's team
goes into the Canyon series with
a record of 11 wins and 18 losses
during their first season in 11
years. It was in 1958 when H-SU
was competing in the Border Con-
ference that it last fielded an in-
tercollegiate baseball team.
Three losses in a row this week
kept the H-SU record from being
near the break-even point. St.
Edwards University of San
Antonio downed the Pokes 9-5
Golf Team
Places 4th
Cowboy golfers won fourth
place in the Sul Ross Invitational
Tournament Friday and Satur-
at Alpine.
Sul Ross had a winning 880
team score followed by Angelo
State 901 Eastern New Mexico
903 Hardin-Simmons 912 and Sul
Ross No. 2 960.

Canyon
Thursday and Trinity University
took a doubleheader Saturday
5-1 and 7-1. All three games
were played on the H-SU dia-
mond. St. Edwards came from behind
to upend the Cowboys who had
gone ahead on the power hitting
of Buddy Haines and Jeff Jones
both of whom connected for
homers in the early innings. The
visitors came alove in the mid-
dle frames scoring four runs in
the sixth inning and knocking
H-SU's Gary Oakley out of the
box.
The Cowboys managed only
three hits in each of Saturday's
games while the Trinity Tigers
connected for six in the first
game and nine in the nightcap.
H-SU's only run in the first game
came on a leadoff home run by
second baseman Jack Graham in
the first inning. Larry Bartlett
scored his team's only run in the
second game after hitting a double
in the fifth inning and coming in
on an error.
Mark Farquhar and Lee Fisher
the Cowboy pitching acres ab-
sorbed the losses. It gave Far
quhar a season record of 6-6 and
Fisher a record of 4-6.

ROTC AWARDS
GIVEN THURSDAY
The- annual presentation of
awards to members of the Reserve
Officers' Training Corps will be
conducted on Awards Day May 6
1969.
This ceremony will be held at
1:00 p.m. at the former site of
Parramore Stadium. Among the
awards presented will be the
Association of the United States
Army Award which is given to
the outstanding junior student of
the cadet corps. Faculty and
staff are invited.
Tennis Team
At Baylor
One more match remains for
the Cowboy tennis team and it's
a big one Tuesday with Baylor
University at Waco. The Cow-
boys blanked the Bears 6-0 April
25 on the H-SU courts.
In action this past week the
Cowboys downed Tarleton State
7-0 here. Coach Phil Tinsworth
gave singles ace Teny Treadwell
a rest while playing some of his
more experienced netters. Tread-
well is a senior.
Les Blackburn played in the
number one spot.

Instrumental Musk
Workshop Planned
A workshop in instrumental
music will be held this summer
at Hardin-Simmons University
Bill Owens assistant professor in
brass and music education at
H-SU has announced.
Open to all area students of or-
chestral instruments who are in
the ninth grade or older the work-
shop will run Monday through
Saturday June 9-14. When ap-
plying for admission students
must submit recommendations
from their school music directors.
College students will also be
accepted.
Planned for the workshop is an
intensive program which will in-
clude coaching in chamber en-
sembles of strings woodwinds
and brass and percussion as well
as private instruction by the
workshop faculty. Music litera-
ture theory and conducting
classes will be held also.
Chamber string orchestras will
be organized and open rehearsals
and formal concerts will be pre-
sented Saturday June 14.
Workshop students will be ac-
commodated in H-SU residence
halls. Full student privileges
will be granted including the use
of all recreational facilities and

libraries. The workshop itself
will be held in air-conditioned
rehearsal halls and classrooms.
Tuition for the workshop will
be free. Students staying in dor-
mitories will pay only the cost of
room board health insurance and
recreation. A pre-registration
fee and meal costs will be paid
by day students.
Private lessons will be avail-
able at the rate of $2.50 per half-
hour lesson.
Members of the workshop fac-
ulty will include Martha Boggs
assistant professor in woodwinds
and music literature; J. G. Mar-
tin assistant professor of music
education; Richard Pliler artist
in residence; and Bill Owens. Also
conducting the workshop will be
two members of the Oklahoma
State University faculty.

dents last fall but enrollment
in the Nation's privately controll-
ed institutions of higher educa-
tion dropped for the first time in.
