LOBOES COACH
Curtain for Simmons 1934 home grid season rises tonight when
Coach Les Cranf ill's charges encounter Sul Ross under the bright
lights of Parramore field.
Mystery is the one word that describes the possible prowess of
the invading eleven from Alpine out in Far-West Texas. As this
sheet goes to press word arrives here that but 16 or 18 of their pos-
sible eligiblo squadmen aro making the trip hero with Coach B. C.
Graves. Of this number ten aro lettcrmen and most of tho balance
arc junior college transfers. Thus . .
tho Invading Loboes with very little
reserve may bo forced to rely on vet-
eran ability and endurance rather
than brawn.

Junior college a year or two ago is
tho man who starred in his team's
7 to 0 victory over Texas Tech back
' in 1031. Jack Frost a fullback and
a junior is believed by local fans to
hail from San Antonio where ho was
once famous in high school circles.
Doubt as to the exact identity of Bed
Pierce fullback and transfer from
Schreincr exists but it is expected
that ha will start.
Coach Graves will likely have two
quarterbacks making tho trip here.
They are Dabbs who will probably
start and S. Thomas who plays at
half but who has no varsity experi-
ence. Dabbs n sophomore is a trans-
fer from Schreiner. McNeil who sums
up tho Invaders' backflcld at half is
a two-year lctterman and probably

Coach D. C. Graves' Loboes come
to Cowtown tonight few in numbers
but great in strength. The Invaders'
squad will total but 18 at tho most
but their ranks will bo made up of
some ten lettcrmen with the remain-
der a healthy balanco in junior col-
lege transfers.
On paper tho Alpine boys havo it
all over Coach Cranfill's sophomore
organization. Fivo veterans of pre-
vious campaigns are tho most that
the Ranchers can boast in their 1934
line-up. However the club is some-
what augmented with tho presence
of eight junior-college and about 20
sophomore squadmen.
Coach D. C .Graves will lead the
Sul Ross Loboes against the Cowboys
tonight in the first home game of the
Ranchers since they met Southwest-
ern university here last fall.

More Veterans
Even less is known about tho Lo
boes' forward wall than about the
secondary. There is Nooncaster a
sophomoro tacklo who reputedly
weighs in around 195 is said to be
rather proficient in the pushing and
shoving department. Cuthbcrt Carll
with one year experience holds down
the right terminal. Robinson more
or less well known as an excellent
guard and utility man is playing his
second season with tho Wolves.
Grimes another second year man
docs most of tho tossing back for his
team.
Graves is expected to hold down
ono of the remaining guard or tacklo
berths. J. Colvin end and tackle a
transfor from Allen Academy will
likely see duty on tho left wing.
Four other men make up the re
mainder of the squad of 1G that
Coach Graves is expected to bring to
Abilene. They aro: Caraway with one
year freshman experience at end;
Addison end and half outstanding
with the 1933 frosh; Mabry transfer
from Ranger Junior college who in-
cidcntly showed rare form in his
team's bout with Texas Tech last
spring; and Gregg sophomoro half-
back with freshman experience only.
Coaches J. Bost and C. Dyer are mak-
ing the trip to Abilene with the squad
as assistants to Graves.

In the memory of this department
tonight's gamo will bo the first en-
counter between Sul Ross and Sim-
)ns. The locals may have had the
pleasure or displeasure of battling
this evening's invaders sometime back
in the 20's but if such ever camo to
pass it slips our memory completely.
Tonight's fracas launches season
operations for the Far-West Tex-
as combination. Since nobody adja-

has anything of a definite idea
about just what the Loboes really

Freshman teams of A. C. C. nnd
Hardin-Simmona scrimmaged to n
scoreless outcome Tuesday afternoon
on Parramore field with tho play
marked as was to bo expected with
frequent fumbles and general clumsi-
ness on the part of both squads.
From the time tho ball was given
to tho Christian Freshies in tho mid-
dle of tho field they ran everything
from a straight end run to a more
complicated type of reverse without
scoring. After gaining possession of
the ball tho Simmonsites gained
35 yards mainly through tho efforts
of Burns McKinney a Wichita Falls
boy. At this point the Kittens sent
their line charging through nnd tho
future Cowboys were compelled to
punt.
With tho exception of a beautiful
run by Adams of tho visitors on n
beautifully executed spinner the vis-
itors were never close to the goal.
The Simmonsites came within inches

Some of tho local talents have been
"wise-ing" us up concerning- the
"whys" and "wherefores" of Sim-
mons' rather puny opener last week
end against Amarlllo's little junior
college. Tho way the old alibi runs
is something like this: Up in the
Plains city even in order to go to
school you have to bo big mean
tough and ugly. A company of bruis
er boys meet freshmen at the gates
and after administering third degrees
rivaling medieval torture reject all
candidates tipping the scales at less
than 200 pounds.
One thing that the Amarlllo gamo
showed-up for the Cranflllmen was
the complete absence of a running
attack that had power enough for a
sustained drive.. Unless the Cow
hands show a very rapid and marked
improvement by the time of their con-
ference opener tho 1934 eleven is duo
to become Just another of history's
forgotten grid clubs.

Defense has always been a strong
factor in favor of practically every
Simmons squad while the powerhouse
tended toward mediocracy. However
wo have it from something liko the
inside that tho Ranchers are going to
show something new in strength to-
night. If the running attack falls to
click completely you may expect to
see Emery in the role of an aerial
threat heaving the oval with danger-
ous effect. Tyler present safety man
punter and ball-toter can bo expect
ed to come across now and again. We
feel safe in saying that Howell who
is not so hot at blocking or on de
fense will show tho boys something
neat if he ever gets into n broken
field.
Local squadmen who saw the Tex
as Tech-Texas U. game last Saturday
say that if Simmons had been playing
the Matadors they would havo been
beaten 75 to 0. 'Tis said also that if
some of the present first stringers
were as mean as they are BIG they
would be All-American instead of
Just the good-natured Hams that they
arc.

Cowboys battled the Amarlllo
Junior College Badgers to a 13-13 tic
on the Amarlllo gridiron last Satur-
day in their initial game of the sea-
son. The Badgers 1033 Junior Collcgo
champions were playing their first
game since they were crowned cham-
pions and were out to show their
homo town support what a powerful
team they really had.
Tho Amarlllo aggregation aver-
aging nbout 187 pounds to tho man
outweighed the invading Cowboys
about 0 or 8 pounds to tho man nnd
presented plenty of power.
Taking tho opening kick-off tho
Cowboys made two successive first
downs on running plays. Then taking
to tho air bad receivership spoiled
the scoring threat and tho ball went
over on downs.
Amarlllo retaliated with one first
down before they wero forced to punt.
From then on until tho middle of the
third quarter the gamo was in tho
hands of the Badgers.
They plowed through tho middle
of the line plunged over guard nnd
ran off tackle for gain after gain
and probably would have tallied more
than 13 points had it not been for the
excellent punting of Pete Tyler Cow-
hand fullback. Tho Badgers made
their first tally on a line plunge after
a series of passes had placed the ball
in scoring position. jincir socona
counter camo in tho third period af
ter a long gain on an end piny had
placed the ball on the one-yard line.
Cherry plunged it over but the sec-
ond try for extra point from place
ment was wide.
Si Addington Cowboy halfback
made a beautiful catch of a long pass
In tho early part of tho fourth quar-
ter to place tho ball on tho fifteen
yard line. The Badgers drew an off-
side penalty on the next play and
from there Tyler plunged over for
tho first H.-S. U. counter. Murphy's
place kick for extra point was good.
Jimmie Neely scored tho second
Cowboy tally on n 10 yard pass from
