Paul Smith Presents Concert at HSU
Paul Smith will be presenting
a concert during the Assembly on
September 8th from 9:20 to 10: 10
a.m.
Paul Smith is returning from a
3-year self-imposed hiatus bring-
ing with him album number 5
Extra Measure (Intersound
Records). After the release of his
fourth album Human Touch in
1991 Smith felt he wasn't con-
necting to the music and the mu-
sic wasn'treaching the people. He
took time to search himself what
he could do musically and how
that related to the people the Lord
wanted him to reach.
"I feel like Extra Measure is
my most consistent album that
truly shows the artist that I am and
the minister I want to be" says
Smith.
Drawing on the writing tal-
ents of Bruce Carroll Dwight Liles
and Geoff Thurman along with
works by Smith music and mes-
sage blend effortlessly to present
timely exchanges of encourage-
ment love and the occasional
prodigalwhileSmith'svocalsever
easy on the ears infuse the album
with emotion and heart. While
Extra Measure's musical ap
proach is more subtle than Smith's
previous works the lyrics remain
pointedly sharp and clearly fo-
cused. "I love this new record. I love
the mood the feel. Make it or
break it I feel comfortable with
Extra Measure. It's filled with
songs that I know will truly reach
people's hearts and messages that
can minister to my generation''
says Smith.
Smith began his career in the
late 70's as a concert promoter and
local performer shortly after
graduating from Baylor Univer-
sity where he studied music. Smith
replaced Russ Taff as the lead
singer of The Imperials. He sang
with The Imperials for five years
before he began his solo career.
Songwriting has always been
and continues to be a foundation
of Smith's ministry. Hehas penned
songs for The Imperials Bruce
Carroll and Larnelle Harris. Some
of his writing companions include
Keith Thomas .and Michael W.
Smith.
Paul Smith lives in Grapevine
with his wife Denise and daughter
Reji where they attend Glenview
Baptist Church.
