Introspection
By Phil Hamilton
REAGAN!
On Tuesaay the people of the United States will decide the future of
our country. Will we continue on the downward path on which we now
Journey or will we reject the current trend and turn toward uniting out
nation and building up our strength to what It once was and' should'
be?
in several of my columns I have advocated voting for Reagan to im-
prove our nation but in this column I hope to show you another reason
to cast your vote with the former governor of California. I will be a col-
lege student for two and a half more years; at least half of the time the
next administration will be in office. I believe Reagan offers the stu-
dent many things that Carter cannot or will not offer. Another com-
parison of the two candidates reveals several Interesting details
about the two men.
Reagan wants to increase the
educational options open to
American families and he pro-
poses a system of tuition tax
credits to help all family incomes
including middle and low class
families. This system will upgrade
not only public education but also
private education like Hardin-
Simmons. Carter however has turned on
his 1976 support for a similar plan
and the dempcrat now opposes tu -tiontax
credits. His rejection of
the plan he once supported does
not help the college student in any
way.
Governor Reagan supports the student's right-to-work and oposes
the compulsory unionization of young people working on summer
Jobs. President Carter advocates the repeal of Section 14(b) of the
Taft-Hartley Act which would permit forced unionization in nearly all
areas including students trying to pay for school by working in the
summer.
While I have mentioned only two issues these issues are of high im-
portance to the college student and should be factors in every stu-
dent's vote. Reagan can help the students in America if the students
will support him in the election. Do your part. Vote for the man that
can help you.

-EDITORIAL
Hostages forgotten
Everyone seems to be talking about the election this week and
everyone knows the names of the three candidates. Many people will
vote Tuesday but there are 49 people who will not have the privilege of
voting. Instead these people will have an anniversary. They have spent
a full year together and the day will go by without a celebration as it
will probably be Just another day in their captive lives as hostages of
the government of Iran.
It has been a full year since the hostages were taken and I
sometimes wonder if America really cares any more about our coun-
trymen in Iran. Sure we remember the hostaqes. Americans have
made fortunes off of selling anti-Khomeini T-shirts and bumper
stickers like "Who shot J.R.?" paraphernalia. Jimmy Carter has given
his campaign an occassional lift by mentioning the 49 captives and of
course Congress has talked considerably about them. Needless to
say Congress talks considerably about everything.
Everyone wants to get something out of the hostage crisis
(although it has not been called a crisis in some time). The television
networks were able to turn late-night special news coverage of the
crisis into permanent news programs with high ratings and the
number of B rated movies about hostages to be released this year
could not be counted on two hands. Americans are so infatuated with
making a buck that we no longer care about how we get it.
America cares about the hostages. We have become patriotic for the
hostages with pictures of Khomeini on billboards and slogans like.
"Fight back cWve 55." Not only have we come up with slogans we
have even gone as far as sending Christmas cards to the hostages.
These little notes have shown our support against the holding of the
Americans. The Iranian government already knew we were against
them. What use is several tons of cards?
So the hostages remain in captivity and life goes on. The only
change on Wednesday will be the illustration behind the newsmen on
the evening news. No longer will it be "The Iranian Crisis: Day 365";
now it will read "The Iranian Situation: Year 1 Day 1."
