The formal lenght gown with dropped shoulders and puffed sleeves was made in 850 hours by 35 Kiwanians and 39 Kiwanis members. The dress was of purple bougainvillea petals w/scrollwork of grapefruit, orange, and sour orange seeds. The evening bag also designed w/ Bougainvillea. Hair ornaments were of orange seeds sprinkled with metallic dust. Ballet shoes were pteals of the same flower w/ trimmings of orange seed. Cost $8.75.

This winning ensemble is called a "landlubbers's outfit" especially popular with schoolgirls because of its simplicity. Blouse was made of the inner skin of white grapefruit, cut in diamond-shaped pieces; waistcoat of red poinsettia petals, and skirt in inch-square pieces of eggplant. Buttons on the costume were made of lacquered papaya seeds, and her handbag was of eggplant. Inner skin of grapefruit formed a soft, pliable material for the blouse. Two-thousand one-inch pieces of eggplant were cut, and 36 grapefruits and 36 poinsetta petals were used. Total cost was $6; time required to make was 262 hours.

Mrs. Hamel is representing the Weslaco Women's Study Club. This lovely green gown was made of broccoli with two tones of color in the skirt. the evening gown was styled with a straight skirt front, sweeping into folds in back. The flower motif was a soft apricot color, made from the membranes of Ruby Red, Foster Pink and White grapefruit. These delicate pieces of grapefruit also were used for the ruffled yoke, fan and juliette cap. The hat was completed with tepejuaje leaves, the sandals were made of broccoli, and her simulated pearl necklace of radishes. Members of the club worked on the gown 400 hours. They used 270 bunches of broccoli, tow and a half quarts of glue, three branches of radishes, four chrysanthemums, six tepejuaje leaves and 110 grapefruit.

Mrs. Moyer is representing the Rio Grande Valley Farm Federation of Mercedes. The new look creeps even into our style show. This dress is a replica of the Gay Gibson girl, a fashion of the "Roaring Twenties." This outfit is complete from its famous hand-span wasp waistline to its huge puffed sleeves with tight fitting long cuffs. The blouse is fashioned of white turnips cut in one-inch diamond shapes and wrapped in clear cellophane. The gold buttons are carrot centers, while the ever-present black tie, which was a "must" in those days, is made of diamond shaped pieces of eggplant. Additional eggplant squares form the full ballerina skirt. The old-fashioned draw-string pouch-bag is created of cellophane-covered green pepper diamonds. Hanging from the belt is a ribbon of eggplant with a fob of gold carrot center. Topping this ensemble is a tiny stiff sailor hat of green peppers with long ribbons of eggplant streaming down the back. Four bushels of eggplant, two bushels turnips, one bushel of peppers and two bunches of carrots were used in the construction of this costume. This is on of the most expensive dresses in that its total cost was $40.00 and 500 hours of priceless time devoted to it.

It was designed with a hand-block pattern, worked into a floral design. top of the dress was made of diiamond shaped peiced of eggplant. her wap-around stole was made of square shaped peppers, with red pyracantha berries foming a fandago fringe. The long strink of beads, twisted in an ornamental know, was made of pyracantha berries also. Her straw sandals were made of raffia used by vegetable shippers to tie bunched vegetables. Workers spent 325 hours in making the costume and $75.00 for materials.

Mrs. Lettunich is representing the Weslaco Rotary Club. The model wore an authentic copy of a dres found in the pages of a Godey's lady book. The gown was made entirely of tepejuaje leaves. Members of the Mother's club of the Stephen F. Austin School made it for the Rotary Club. White chrysanthemums were used in decorating the pankcake hat and for the hand muff. The same flower petals decorated the dress. A small amount of gold glitter was used to brighten the costume which required 394 hours to complete.
