The study print project is part of a national movement to
blend aesthetics, history, criticism and technique in the
teaching of art. Teaching guides accompanying the prints should
encourage classroom discussions about the artist's life, cultural
themes, historical details, artistic styles and each work's
medium.
Berry says the project will be beneficial to everyone
involved.
"The generous grant from the Edward and Betty Marcus
Foundation enables teachers and students in area schools to
experience masterpieces from our fine art museums on a daily
basis," she says.
"The images and information about them will be integrated
into their regular lessons in many subjects, making art a part of
their everyday learning."
Allison Perkins, education director for the Amon Carter
Museum, says the project is a rare opportunity for teachers to
share the resources of some of the nation's best museums.
"Students who don't have access to the museum will at least
have access to the images," says Perkins.
As one of her five selections from the Amon Carter Museum,
Perkins picked Grant Wood's Parson Weems' Fable because of the
painting's multiple themes. The oil on canvas, painted in 1930 by
the artist of American Gothic, tells the story of George
Washington and the legendary cherry tree. The painting includes a
small self-portrait of the artist peeling back the canvas to
reveal the great American tale.
"This painting has such a strong narrative element. It gets
kids involved in several dialogues," Perkins says.
The institute and the museums were careful to select works
that show a variety of cultures and artists. Selections from the
Dallas Museum of Art will include objects from African and Pre-
