1. The Mission
The overall mission of the Ohio Center for Excellence in Art Education is to promote
more comprehensive and higher-order learning in the visual arts by all students in schools
(DBAE).
By "comprehensive" we mean an understanding of art in its many contexts - studio
production, historical, philosophical, critical, social, cultural. By "higher-order" we mean
learning that engages the child in conceptual and reflective thinking: problem-solving,
criticism, interpretation, establishing relationships. This goal implies the continuing
development of curricula that are consistent with DBAE principles, relate art to other school
subjects and engage learners in activities that connect studio work closely with non-studio
work.
In our view, a comprehensive art curriculum should respond to local differences and
also take advantage of widely disseminated ideas and materials. There are large demographic
and financial differences between school districts and museums in Ohio; a wide range of
students, from college-bound to at-risk students; and teachers themselves have different skills
and interests. Teachers should be encouraged to create or adapt curricula to suit their
situations. At the same time, they need to have available a rich variety of resources - national
or regional models, units, materials, demonstrations, and discussions. The result should be a
balanced interaction between local circumstances and a network of widely disseminated ideas
and resources.
Such curricula require the continued professional development of art educators. An
important aspect of the Center's mission is to promote professional development in art
education at all levels: of experienced school teachers, beginning teachers, pre-service
teachers, museum educators, university faculty, and graduate students.
The goal of the Center is to address issues of curriculum development in the visual arts,
promote the professional development of art educators at all levels and disseminate ideas and
materials through an interactive network.
