differences. In terms of content, we will focus on contemporary art, folk art, ethnic art--all of
which tend to require a cultural, political, and historical context to be understood. In terms of
personnel, we intend to make full use of the demographic variety in Ohio, encouraging local
variation and the use of personnel from different backgrounds.
3. The Specialty Program
The proposed specialty program is the development of curricula Wonce d
contemporary art works and issues, including the art of various ethnic and other cultural
groups. Such development will include theory building, development of curriculum materials,
classroom trial, assessment and dissemination, which we refer to as "R, D, & D." The work
will be conducted by project teams of art educators, including teachers, university faculty,
university students, museum personnel, and others as appropriate. We will network the area
sites across the nation to form similar teams of like-minded art educators. This network will
be both face-to-face and electronically-based and will form a "virtual community" of
curriculum developers/researchers.
This program takes advantage of the unique features of art education in the Ohio
Partnership and at OSU. These features include:
* good working relations with and between many local school districts, the Ohio State
Department of Education, art museums, and other arts agencies;
* connections with other art education departments and personnel around the country and
internationally;
* a large research-oriented university faculty at OSU and a significant graduate program and
student body;
* the support of the Wexner Center for the Contemporary Arts, the Advanced Computing t
Center for the Arts and Desin, and other resources at OSU. 4 '
The strength of the faculty at OSU lies in its focus on the contemporary arts (including
in that phrase folk art and the art of various ethnic groups). It is a feature of these arts, in our
"post-modern" world, that they are often politically or socially motivated and in various ways
