MINUTES OF THE FIRST 1995 TXSSAR BOARD OF MANAGERS MEETING
MARCH 12, 1995
chapter. He went on to enumerate, over 17 million potential SAR's exist, and this tape could be
used to reach "more" potential members. One possible location for such a tape would be
libraries, and this might be a way of getting libraries more involved with the Society. Compatriot
Head closed by stating the State's historical records were at the meeting, if anyone is interested
in seeing them. Former President David Yeilding commented that he thought the video could be
a good idea, and that it should be produced professionally. Clell Sechrest noted the target price
would need to be below $30. Gene Divine pointed out, he felt that chapters' sizes should be
considered when pri cing or requesting chapters' funding. David Crymes feels that VCR tape is
an older media, and recommends making a CD-ROM disk instead. Chairman Harrington closed
the discussion by noting he would create a committee to address these questions.
Tom Green (TXSSAR Genealogist) presented the PineyWoods Chapter Book that was being
produced. Having never heard or seen any such work by the SAR, Tom pointed out the book
would contain copies of each chapter members' application and supplemental application,
member biographies, ancestor lineage charts, an all-name-index and would be hard cover bound.
Tom also pointed out that the book contained a forward from George Brandau. Estimates as of
the March State meeting were to make $7 to $10 per book and sell it for $25 pre-publication, $35
once the printing was started.
Tom also remarked, he would be glad to assist any chapters with respect to genealogy. He
closed by pointing out his intent to put together a Genealogy Workshop, and asked that any
chapters interested please contact him. C.R. echoes his enthusiasm about the prospects for this
new year.
Joe Hill requested emeritus status be granted to 88-year-old, Lt. Commander Ira Baccus (SAR#:
102388, TXSSAR#: 2500). Joe pointed out, this would make six living emeritus status members
of the Society. The motion was seconded. Though Del Fowler expressed his interest in NOT
granting the emeritus status, the motion DID carry.
Jack Haughton noted that the Denton Chapter was making a donation of 10% of it's initial
contributions, to the Patriots Fund. He pointed out that rather than the expense of distributing
Certificates of Appreciation, chapters should consider donations to the Patriots Fund and/or the
Friends of Texas fund.
Billy Hightower wanted to see if there was much interest in creating a Vice Presidenis Manual.
Emmett Parkerson was VERY interested, and said he would like to help draft such a document.
The point was made that there is no document now, and something is needed for a District Vice
President to understand what their responsibilities include.
There were several comments prior to the close of the meeting, that referenced the apparent
high cost for this year's state meeting. Reed Dillon pointed out that one of the pre-requisites for
the convention was "On the Riverwalk", and that that requirement added significantly to the cost.
Ross Shipman went on to add that, there were a high number of meals paid for by TXSSAR that
went to guests in attendance and awards presented. Noting that the August 11th and 12th Board
of Managers Meeting would be in Tyler, C.R. asked membership for their ideas on how to best
hold down costs and expenses in the future.
All in attendance were asked to remember to send newsletters and articles to both James Head
and Editor of the Texas Compatriot, Joe Bagley.
Respectfully submitted, Allan M. Henshaw, TXSSAR Recording Secretary.- Page 2 -
