Pentagon officials tonight issued a terse statement,
saying they could not confirm whether the bombing of
North Vietnam ended at 5 o'clock this afternoon, as
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird had said it would.
The Pentagon says it is waiting for detailed
"poit-bombing" reports before making any further
statements on the raids, staged in retaliation for
attacks on un-armed U.S. reconnaissance planes.
Reaction on Capitol Hill to the U.S. move was
about as expected, with the so-called "doves"
saying it was a mistake.
The North Vietnamese delegation to the Paris Peace
