Supporters of the new school went to work
immediately in the Senate and House to get the
simple majority needed in each chamber to recall
the bill from Smith's desk, and amend it.
Governor Smith said, "It's apparent that a new
4-year school in the Dallas area at this time could
do nothing but harm the undergraduate programs of
existing institutions in the Dallas-Fort Worth area."
Senator Don Kennard of Fort Worth, who figured
in establishing UT at Arlington and who's bitterly
