THE FAIRY TALES OF OSCAR
WILDE
Michael Hague, illus. Henry Holt. 1993.
183p, $19.95. ISBN 0-8050-1009-2
More than a hundred years ago, Oscar Wilde
wrote nine fairy tales for his sons. Several,
"The Happy Prince," "The Selfish Giant,"
"The Star-Child," and "The Birthday of the
Infanta," have become classic examples of
moral, good and evil, humanitarian stories.
In print, film or video, they are beloved by
children and adults. Michael Hague, one of
the best-loved American illustrators of clas-
sics for children, illustrated these stories
with glorious paintings. This is a book for
your libraries or to suggest for gift giving.

Book House) c1961,1995. 266p.$8.99pb
(Catherine Marshall Library Series) ISBN

Once again this inspiring work on prayer,
searching and finding God "as the Com-
forter reveals Christ to us, (and) in Him we
have our heart's desire," is available in a new

have become a byword of hope and peace
over the last three decades. Her words now

own life and search for inspirational conclu-
sions in the midst of crises, doubts, and
cares, has brought comfort, strength and
purpose to millions around the world. Even
if you have an older copy in your library,
you might want to consider this new print-
ing, especially for those who have been
inspired by the television show "Christy."
They may be looking for other books by her.THE LION,THE WITCH AND THE
WARDROBE
C.S,Lewis. Abridged and illustrated by Robin
Lawrie. Harper Trophy. c1950,1993. 64p.
$7.95pb ISBN 0-06-443388-4. For ages 8
up.
I'm sure Lewis himself would be pleased
with the outstanding illustrations in his book
by Robin Lawrie. The story has been abridged
in what some might term a comic strip for-
mat: a medieval, illuminated manuscript re-
telling of this wonderful tale of childhood,
imagination, good and evil, and self-sacri-
ficing love. Lead your youngest readers to
this. Wean them with the video, and then
urge them to read the original to experience
all of Narnia to which Lewis would have
them venture.
DOES GOD EXIST? AN ANSWER FOR
TODAY
Hans Kung. Crossroad. c1978,1994. 839p.
$29.50pb ISBN 0-8245-119-0.
For those who have been asking, Kung's
classic of two decades has been published
anew. Text alone (702 pages) affirms the
answer "yes" in this monumental work that
caused not only Roman Catholic, but cross-
denominational thinkers, and theological
scholars, to stop short and ponder. This
work, and Kung's other writings, will estab-
lish him for the new millennium as one of the
most outstanding Christian apologists and
writers for any century. God-belief, doubt,
and non-belief- have existed throughout
recorded history. Kung has synthesized phi-
losophy, religion, the Bible, and human life
and struggle, into his positive affirmation of
a God and son Jesus Christ who will be there
for all times and all peoples.
PEOPLE FROM THE BIBLE
Old Testament: Martin Woodrow. New Tes-
tament: E.P.Sanders. Morehouse Barlow.
c1987 1st American edition. 180p. $25.95.
ISBN 0-8192-1460-4.
This could bea "who's who" reference book,
an art book or a history of Biblical events
biographical commentary. Itcovers 327 Bib-
lical lives. In 100 superb color paintings,
through archeology and study of people be-
lieved to be descendents of Biblical fami-
lies, it illustrates those people of long ago as
real people. It contains introductions to the
books of the Bible, to the Old and New
Testament and the Apocrypha. A specialsection explains Biblical dates, and contains
maps of both Old and New Testament his-
tory. Persons are easily located through a
normal following of the books of the Bible
or the List of People (and pages) in the
preface or the concluding index. This is a
beautiful reference book for young people
(high school) and adults.
MY LIFE WITH MARTIN LUTHER
KING,JR
Coretta Scott King. Revised edition. Henry
Holt. c1969,c1993. 335p. $17.95. ISBN 0-
8050-2445-X
When Mrs. King first wrote this book,
America was just beginning to cope with the
tragedy of of her husband's assassination.
"Her personal narrative helped us to hold on
to his memory. Now addressing a new gen-
eration of readers, she reminds us of the Dr.
King many of us have forgotten... recount-
ing the events of the Civil Rights
Movement...(she) shows us the true power
of militant nonviolence - the most effec-
tive force for changing race relations in
United States history." - from the flyleaf.
To which I add "Amen". No congregational
library should be without a copy of this
book.

KNEELING IN JERUSALEM (Large
Print Edition). ISBN 0-664-25515-9. Ann
Weems. Westminster/John Knox. c1993.
100p., 108p. Each S10.00pb (Regular edi-
tions are still available from the publisher)
These collections of inspirational poems for
the Advent-Christmas and Lent-Easter sea-
sons, are some of the most poignant poetic
meditations I've encountered in many years.
Weems has the knack of portraying in down-
to-earth language, yet with striking and re-
freshing insight, some of the most tradi-
tional and meaningful subjects of these most
holy seasons of the Christian year. Using her
poems with classes, worship occasions or
just for personal meditation and centering,
I've found they speak to the heart and soul
with truth and love. The large print editions,
in addition to making her words available for
the sight impaired, are excellent for public
reading.C&SL -November/December -1995
