NEWS OF THE ASSOCIATION
What a treat to open up my Oregonian newspaper Thursday morning, January
9, 1992 and look straight into the face of our very able columnist, Connie
Soth! The gist of the article accompanying her photo was that she felt
churches which put talented people, such as those with good voices, to work, but
ignored writers, and she was doing something about it. She "set forth to find those who
were heavy laden with literary talent" and formed an organization, "St. Matt's
Writers," a group of about 15 amateur and professional writers. Congratulations, and
many blessings, Connie, on this new venture.
CONFERENCE SITE CHANGE!
The location of the 1992 Conference has been changed. Instead of using
Michigan State University facilities we will be in the Harley Hotel. in East
Lansing. . .with air conditioning and other wonderful accommodations and
services not available at MSU, but with a comparable cost! You will be very
satisfied with this new site. In fact, you will be very sorry if you miss this
conference! Further details will be forthcoming in March.
It is a privilege to congratulate the staff of three congregational libraries this month
for completing the self-assessment program sponsored by the Continuing Education
Committee of CSLA. Helen Elliott, librarian of Plymouth Congregational Church
in Lansing, Michigan, completed Level 3 "Advanced" on December 19, 1991.
Dianne Barnum, librarian at the First Church of God in Jackson, Michigan,
completed Level 3 "Advanced" on January 15, 1992. And, Josephine W. Sale,
librarian at First Congregational in East Hartford, Connecticut, completed Level 1
"Basic" on January 18, 1992. These people have worked well and hard to obtain this
status and deserve our sincerest congratulations.
Due to staff vacations, the office will be closed from March 20 to April 4, 1992.
The office will re-open on Monday, April 6th. Thank you for holding your calls until
that date.
NEWS OF THE CHAPTERS AND AFFILIATES
The CENTRAL OHIO CHAPTER planned their annual spring meeting for
Saturday, March 7th at the Worthington Presbyterian Church. Their program consisted
of several how-to sessions: on mending, basic cataloging and inventory, designing a
brochure, and a make-it-and-take-it display. Keynote speaker was CSLA president,
Dr. Ruth Schneider. This chapter has designed a new and regular newsletter "in the
spirit of our goal for better communication," and are to be congratulated on its
excellent appearance.
"Spring fo.r New Ideas" was the theme for the April 4th DELAWARE VALLEY
CHAPTER WORKSHOP held at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania. A variety of workshops were available: "Policy and Procedures
Manual" led by Naomi Kauffman; "Image of the Librarian" by Lin Wright;
"Interlibrary Loan" by Connie Ditman; "Library Services of CSLA" by Diane van
Naerssen; "Rap Sessions for Beginners" by Jenni Pritchett; and "Advanced RAP
Session" by Charles Snyder. Luncheon speaker was Sally Keehan, author of IAm
Regina.
The HOUSTON AREA CHAPTER held a winter meeting on February 15, 1992
at Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Spring, Texas. Hostesses were Jane
Arnolt, Lottie Scheffield, and Ellen Skiba. Using the theme "Creative Communication
through Patterns and Print," Cecile Holmes White, religion editor of the Houston
Chronicle, and an awards winner for reporting and writing, spoke on "Creative2/Church & Synagogue Libraries
