220.95 Jesus Christ biography
This is part one of a series of three videos on the life of Jesus
Christ. There is a short introduction explaining that all we
know of Jesus biographically comes from the four Gospels,
archeological contributions and from looking at the land
and people who live in Palestine (Israel) today.
The introduction and story, which covers Jesus' life from
the Annunciation through his 12th year, are shown in both
great works of art and live action. The video gives much
historical background on cultural practices of Christ's times,
such as an explanation of the meaning and practice of
"Betrothal" both then and now.
Two narrators tell the story, one describing cultural,
historical, geographical conditions and the second reading
the Biblical texts.
As excellent mini-biography of Herod the Great, his
extensive architectural building and rebuilding throughout
Palestine and the horrors of his reign and successors, is told.
Nazareth then and now: crafts, foods and food prepara-
tion, clothmaking and village life including Torah school
and the joyous celebration of the Sabbath are shown in
describing what the hidden years of Jesus' youth probably
were like.
While not specifically a "Christmas" video, it could be
used in educational or worship setting during the Advent/
Christmas season.
Scholarship, photography and overall sight-sound, you-
are-there presentation, make this an excellent selection for
video collections in congregational libraries. (Home view
rights only apply to this video at this price. Inquire of the
distributor regarding public performance cost and informa-
tion on parts 2 and 3).WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE.

291.43 Grief
Rabbi Kushner powerfully presents in a lecture before a
live audience the thinking and faith behind his internation-
ally best-selling book.
The book grew out of his own family's personal loss of
their son Aaron at age 14. Aaron had lived, suffered and
struggled with a disease that ages people quickly beyond
control from age 3 to 14.
Kushner tells how all the conventional questions and
answers we have and give at death could not comfort or bring
peace to the grief, pain and anger he experienced. He could
no longer understand how as pastor he, as a pastor, had
brought comfort to others.
He details how rereading the Book of Job as if he were Job
himself, began to put him on the track of asking and receiv-
ing the right questions and answers. He states it is legitimate
to call God to account in terms of His own standards of
justice.
So often when a person dies, we say "I don't know what to
say." Kushner says to say, ' I'm sorry.' "Then keep your
mouth shut and just be there."
The book and video provide Kushner's answer that is
practical as it is powerful. It provides a reaffirmation of a
belief in God and offers compassionate direction for those in
pain.
