and you're roaring down there at a little over about
125-130 miles an hour to get it in the air, and when
you go through all that, it's pretty silly to get up
and get chicken at that point. You might as well get
that way before you take the aircraft up.
Especially after you've been up since before dawn, and,
like you say, it is one more mission closer to home,
and I suppose most of you did not want to postpone the
inevitable, you know. You wanted to get those twenty-
five missions over with and get out of there--the sooner
the better.
I think it's more like life itself--it can always happen
to the other guy, but it's not going to happen to me.
I see. Well, I think this would take care of most of
the preliminary questions, and we can more or less get
down to the point of talking about your being shot down
and your eventual capture, unless you have anything else
that you think ought to be in the record prior to talking
about that.
No, just instances that I think would have no bearing--
just personal instances. Oh, I can remember when we
hooked up with a man when we first got in Foggia who was
recuperating from a bayonet wound from hand-to-hand
combat. We had not even seen a shot fired at this point,
