PEOPLE:
LEADER:
The Special Sculpture of Dr. Martin Luther King
is being done by James E. Kempp.From ignorance and darkness, stupidity, and fears;
From chains of chattel slavery, and sullen evil years;
From hopelessness, and helplessness, and broken-
hearted tears;
From desperate miasma of floundering under jeers;
From stooping to the Sunday-folks and bending to
the lash;
From weeping over children lost, the desperate and
the rash;
From shuddering and shivering upon the auction stand;
From walking in the shackled line and dying hand in hand;
From bleeding in the battle-lines and fighting in the fields;
From slipping through the canebrake to the pittance
sorrow yields;
0 God of earth and sky and sea,
Great God of love and majesty,
Thine humble servants everyone
In mercy have we come.
From dreaming of the golden harps to play upon and sing;
From sitting at the welcome board where mild and honey
spring;
From wearing of that long white robe with sandals on
our feet;
From talking with our Jesus-King where peace and glory
meet;
From climbing Jacob's ladder and wrestling till the day;
From riding in a chariot up where the angels play:
From laying down our sword and shield down by the
riverside
And walking up the glory-road with Jesus at our side;
From ringing of the golden bells and touching gates of
pearl;
From turning backs to sorrow and the evil sin-washed
world;
